Stars
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were holed up in the corner of a cowboy bar
When you asked me to dance
I couldn't answer
But I met you on the floor and we left in a fight
In the cab back home
All I could think about was second chances

And we have skirted lines and endings
We have flirted with disaster
You were there in the beginning
I'll be there for what comes after

The stars that fell for you
Left holes in my roof
The stars that fell for you
They fell for you and I'm falling too
They fell for you and I'm falling too
(Stars, stars)

I was looking for a lighter in a bedside drawer
Found a picture and a pack of matches
From another lifetime
Yeah, I'm missing the parade but I'm done with the war
There's a hole in this sweater
You told me that you're gonna patch up

And we have skirted fires and flood planes
We have flirted with disaster
I was there in the beginning
When you were swinging from the rafters

The stars that fell for you
Left holes in my roof
The stars that fell for you
They fell for you and I'm falling too
They fell for you and I'm falling too
(Stars, stars)

A world without color is a world without
A world without color is a world without you
A world without color is a world without
A world without color is a world without
A world without color is a world without you
(Stars, stars)

The stars that fell for you
(The stars that fell for you)
Left holes in my roof
(Stars, stars)
The stars that fell for you
(The stars that fell for you)
They fell for you and I'm falling too
(Stars, stars)
They fell for you and I'm falling too
(The stars that fell for you)

A world without color is a world without (stars, stars)

A world without color is a world without
A world without color is a world without you (the stars that fell for you)

Overall Meaning

In "Stars," Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness tells the story of a relationship. The song begins with the couple reminiscing about their first meeting at a bar and how they had a fight in a cab on their way back home. A hint of past tensions is also visible when Andrew talks about second chances. In the next part of the song, Andrew uncovers an image of his past life while looking for a lighter in the bedside drawer. He says he misses the parade but is done with the war, reflecting his moving on from the past. Andrew adds that they have faced several obstacles before, including natural disasters but have managed to keep their relationship going. The song talks about the stars that used to fall for the person Andrew was in love with, representing how he used to look up to them, only to fall for them himself.

The lyrics in the chorus convey the depth of Andrew's feelings. The holes in his roof, left by the stars that fell for his love, signify the impact the person had on him. Andrew accepts that he has fallen too, indicating the relationship is mutual. The last few verses of the song talk about how a world without the person would be dull and monotonous. Andrew emphasizes that this person adds color to his life and how his life would be incomplete without them.

Overall, "Stars" by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness is a heartfelt song that captures the essence of a relationship. It highlights how even the scars of the past cannot stop true love, and how love adds color to life that would otherwise be dull.

Chris

Really though? He's been doing this 20+ years and I think "Cecilia" got a lot of mainstream attention didn't it? Is that really underrated at this point?

I've been a fan of Andrew since 2004 when I heard SoCo on an artist radio (like Pandora). Somehow I've NEVER seen him live in all these years. Finally get to break that on the 1st and I CANNOT WAIT.

You're in for one of the best nights of your life ♥️

Chris

@Catrina McPherson literally only allowed myself to watch one video (from a few years ago). I'm really high risk for covid and going to a show is not the best idea, but my life is also falling apart and I need SOMETHING. But yeah. Absolutely cannot WAIT. So excited.

Catrina McPherson

@Chris ah man. I'm really sorry to hear that. Sending you love and light. Enjoy yourself at the show and just let yourself go.... his shows are incredible and his fans....some of the best! ♥️ (You may be able to catch him near his tour bus after the show ☺️)
