1. After Cherry People disbanded, Punky Meadows and Mickie Jones formed Daddy Warbux, later BUX, which released one album. Angel formed after the two met Gregg Giuffria and then Barry Brandt and Frank Dimino, choosing the name "Angel".
Angel were discovered by Kiss bassist Gene Simmons who secured them a deal with Casablanca Records in 1975. The original members of the band were Barry Brandt on drums, "Punky" Meadows on guitar, Frank DiMino on vocals, Greg Giuffria on keyboards and Mickey Jones on bass. Their self-titled debut album, Angel, released in 1975, was an excellent bit of heavy pomp rock, and their lyrics dealt with battles and events in history. They developed an exciting stage concept which was based on the pure colour of white with various illusions and effects and this won them many fans. Their second album, "Helluva Band", released in 1976, featured one of their best tracks, the lengthy "The Fortune Tower ", was most notable as one of their few tunes to grace the air waves. Our featured album saw Angel adopt a more pop/rock sound and introduced a novel logo which read identically when upside down. Micky Jones was later replaced by Felix Robinson and featured on the follow-up album, "White Hot", also released in 1977, along with On Earth As It Is In Heaven. In 1979, Angel were involved in the movie "Foxes" with Cherie Currie , but were later dropped by Casabalanca because of lack of sales. The group split in 1980 after the "Live Without A Net" live album, with Giuffria forming his own outfit with guitarist Craig Goldy, bassist Chuck Wright and drummer Alan Krigger. Giuffria also later featured in House of Lords.
Angel reformed in the late nineties with two original members: Barry Brandt and Frank DiMino. A new album, "In the Beginning", was released in 1999. The album included contributions from various musicians as well guest appearances by Punky Meadows and Felix Robinson. Since then Angel has continued to tour and has been invited to perform at several major festivals including Sweden Rock and Bang Your Head. The current lineup includes: Frank DiMino, Barry Brandt, guitarist Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe/Near Life Experience), keyboardist Michael T. Ross (Lita Ford/Hardline) and bassist Randy Gregg (Thin Lizzy/Lauren Harris).
In 2008 Lovember Records reissued “On Earth As It Is In Heaven” as a Limited Edition. The album has been digitally remastered and includes a 16-page booklet with liner notes by journalist Dave Reynolds (Classic Rock Magazine/Kerrang), a track-by-track run down by singer Frank DiMino, all lyrics and unreleased photos.
In 2018, Meadows and Dimino toured together under the moniker 'Punky Meadows and Frank Dimino of Angel' performing a set of classic Angel songs and solo cuts. They are backed by a band featuring Danny Farrow on rhythm guitar, Charlie Calv on keyboards, Steve Ojane on bass and Billy Orrico on drums. Angel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Silence echoes loudly, for three lives here.
Seagull, flying high above the open sky,
Flying high and free, past each wistful eye.
I brush my arms and legs,
I smash my withered face,
To show them I'm with no disgrace.
They've locked me in this hell,
'Till dawn will ring the hangman's bell.
Burning are the hours left for me to share,
A cold and icy stare is all I bare.
Marching to my death, they'll hang me till I die.
Still I know I'll find where my fortune lies.
Chorus:
Voices in the air,
Leave me with a dream.
Crying of despair,
Can't you hear me scream?
Soon I'll say no more,
Only one last sigh,
As they pull the door,
There my fortune lies
The Fortune by Angel is a song that speaks to the struggles of an individual who has been locked up in a padded cell all alone with nothing but the silence of his own mind. The first verse paints a picture of the empty castle grounds at dusk, where even the seagull flying above the sky seems to have more freedom than the individual locked up in the cell. The second verse depicts the frustration of this individual as he tries to fight his way out of his situation, but ultimately fails as the dawn brings the hangman's bell. Despite his imminent death, he knows that his fortune lies somewhere beyond.
The chorus is an expression of the individual's desperation to be heard as he cries out for help, but it is all in vain as he knows that he is on his own. He is resigned to the fact that his fate is sealed and that his only solace lies in the fact that his suffering will soon come to an end. The song touches on themes of loneliness, despair, and the search for meaning and purpose in life.
Line by Line Meaning
Empty are the castle grounds when dusk arrives,
The castle grounds are devoid of any life or activity when it starts to get dark.
Silence echoes loudly, for three lives here.
In a place where nobody speaks, not even whispers, the impenetrable silence echoes ominously, making its presence known through its imposing hollowness.
Seagull, flying high above the open sky,
A seagull soaring high above the clouds, embracing its freedom and existence to the fullest.
Flying high and free, past each wistful eye.
As it passes those who look up at it with hope, a seagull knows no bounds to its travels except to the limitations others place upon it.
I brush my arms and legs,
Sensing the disconnect between oneself and the world, one acknowledges and tries to rid themselves of the uncomfortable sensation of the unknown.
I smash my withered face,
To show the world that I am not weak, I will go to the extremes of hurting myself because the pain is better than showing that I'm vulnerable.
To show them I'm with no disgrace.
Even in the face of crippling oppression and being deprived of one's freedom, one defiantly shows that they are not ashamed of who they are or what they believe in.
Deep in a padded cell,
Incarcerated and isolated from the world, with only the four padded corners of a cell to interact with.
They've locked me in this hell,
A place of unrelenting torment and misery, confined by others for reasons that are unjust and unwarranted.
'Till dawn will ring the hangman's bell.
When night turns to day and the sun rises over the horizon, I will meet my death by hanging, which inevitability looms like a sword over my head.
Burning are the hours left for me to share,
All that is left for me is a limited amount of time that is gradually decreasing, as if it is being burned away, and I have nothing I can do to stop it.
A cold and icy stare is all I bare.
Facing the inevitability of death without regret or hesitation, I gaze back icily and unflinchingly at my oppressors.
Marching to my death, they'll hang me till I die.
As I head towards my fate of dying by hanging, I don't show any fear or reluctance. My path is predetermined and I have accepted it without regret.
Still I know I'll find where my fortune lies.
Despite the inevitable fate that awaits me, I am confident that my life has a purpose, my time on this earth meaningful, and my destiny certain.
Voices in the air,
Echoes of past and present lives that have passed before me.
Leave me with a dream.
Remnants of these spirits in the air, giving me hope to continue on.
Crying of despair,
The sound of other hopeless and helpless beings who share in the agony that is existence.
Can't you hear me scream?
Why is it that no one hears my pain and suffering?
Soon I'll say no more,
Soon the burden of existence will be lifted and I'll be escaping from this world.
Only one last sigh,
A sign of resignation and relief as the burden of existence is cast off with one final exhale.
As they pull the door,
The final nail in my coffin, as death comes knocking at my door.
There my fortune lies
Freedom from everything that is shackling me, and the great beyond of what comes next. This is what I have been striving for, and now it is finally within reach.

If Angel had only done this one song and nothing else they would be remembered as an important part of Rock lore. Thankfully they wrote more.

The intro to "the Fortune" is indescribable alwaiys brings tears into my eyes and Frank Diminos Voice is just as powerful, unique and astonishing as it was in the 70s. So glad they play again. There are very few singers left who deserve to be called singers/artists. Frank Dimino is definetely one of the few - if not to say - he and his talent are way above "being just great".
