Fortune
Angel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Empty are the castle grounds when dusk arrives,
Silence echoes loudly, for three lives here.
Seagull, flying high above the open sky,
Flying high and free, past each wistful eye.

I brush my arms and legs,
I smash my withered face,
To show them I'm with no disgrace.
Deep in a padded cell,
They've locked me in this hell,
'Till dawn will ring the hangman's bell.

Burning are the hours left for me to share,
A cold and icy stare is all I bare.
Marching to my death, they'll hang me till I die.
Still I know I'll find where my fortune lies.

Chorus:
Voices in the air,
Leave me with a dream.
Crying of despair,
Can't you hear me scream?
Soon I'll say no more,
Only one last sigh,

As they pull the door,
There my fortune lies

Overall Meaning

The Fortune by Angel is a song that speaks to the struggles of an individual who has been locked up in a padded cell all alone with nothing but the silence of his own mind. The first verse paints a picture of the empty castle grounds at dusk, where even the seagull flying above the sky seems to have more freedom than the individual locked up in the cell. The second verse depicts the frustration of this individual as he tries to fight his way out of his situation, but ultimately fails as the dawn brings the hangman's bell. Despite his imminent death, he knows that his fortune lies somewhere beyond.

The chorus is an expression of the individual's desperation to be heard as he cries out for help, but it is all in vain as he knows that he is on his own. He is resigned to the fact that his fate is sealed and that his only solace lies in the fact that his suffering will soon come to an end. The song touches on themes of loneliness, despair, and the search for meaning and purpose in life.

There my fortune lies
Freedom from everything that is shackling me, and the great beyond of what comes next. This is what I have been striving for, and now it is finally within reach.

If Angel had only done this one song and nothing else they would be remembered as an important part of Rock lore. Thankfully they wrote more.

The intro to "the Fortune" is indescribable alwaiys brings tears into my eyes and Frank Diminos Voice is just as powerful, unique and astonishing as it was in the 70s. So glad they play again. There are very few singers left who deserve to be called singers/artists. Frank Dimino is definetely one of the few - if not to say - he and his talent are way above "being just great".
