You
Angelina Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My garden is full of roses in bloom
A halo like crown was placed on my door
All of these gifts, they melted like sand
You sold them for a fix and left me with stories of
Diamonds and gold
I saw you for you and you hated me for loving
The real you well nothing left to do but say good bye
You're showing off wool and hiding your claws
You stole all of my bread and left none
You're packing your bags. It's time to set sail
You kept your deadly fix and left me with stories of
Diamonds and gold
I saw you for you and you hated me for loving
The real you well nothing left to do but say good bye
We had our time- it was once and never again
We said goodbye - to our fairy tale end
I've done my crying for you
I saw you for you and you hated me for loving
The real you well nothing left to do but say good bye

I saw you for you and you hated me for loving
The real you well nothing left to do but say good bye- The End

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Angelina's song "You" describe a painful break-up of a romantic relationship where one person is betrayed by their lover. The singer describes their garden blooming with roses, and the feeling of being blessed with a halo-like crown on their door, however, all of their happiness was short-lived as their lover sold all the gifts for a fix and left nothing behind but stories of diamonds and gold. This shows how the singer's love for the other person blinded them to the truth of who they really were, which is further emphasized when the singer says, "I saw you for you and you hated me for loving the real you". The lyricist acknowledges that nothing is left to be done but to say goodbye to their lover, as there is no real love in this relationship anymore.

The song exudes sadness not just because of the breakup but mainly because of the realization that their partner was not who they thought they were. The lyrics "We had our time, it was once and never again. We said goodbye - to our fairy tale end" shows the acceptance of the singer that their relationship had to come to an end. The pain is apparent when the singer sings, "I've done my crying for you". The way the lyrics are crafted, the singer is not only shedding light on the pain of losing someone but is also shedding light on the pain of seeing someone you love being transformed into a monster by their addiction.

Thank you for featuring Angelina a second time, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on YouTube, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.

Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.

There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below,

(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
(g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
(h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
(i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
(j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
(k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
(l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella!

Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

- Who is Angelina Jordan - (For those watching her for the first time)

Angelina is a Norwegian born child prodigy in music. She's a singer/ songwriter who's arranged over 180 covers and 5 originals, all since the age of 7. Angelina began singing at 18 months old. At 2, she began teaching herself how to sing, focusing primarily on the jazz masters of decades gone by. These are artists such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James. She's also influenced by Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, and Adele, to name a few. She's also been said to be the girl of 1,000 voices. Yet even though we can hear the phrasing and style she puts in the songs, it's always Angelina that we hear.

At 7 years old, she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent. She was the last to audition. The judges had no idea who she was or what she could do. They saw a diminutive mussy haired, barefooted girl with her teeth still growing in. For her audition, she performed "Gloomy Sunday" from Billie Holiday. On TV-2, they've reported over 14 million views of this performance. This does not take into account the many hundreds of reactors showing this audition to millions more.

Needless to say, Angelina went on to win the 2014 season of NGT shortly after her 8th birthday. The family was bombarded with requests for performances, interviews, and record label offers. They turned down 90% of the requests, as they insisted that Angelina should enjoy a normal childhood.

That didn't stop Angelina from performing at select engagements around the world, singing for Heads of State, and even Barack Obama. She's spent time and worked with musicians such as Quincy Jones and Alan Walker. She first appeared on American television, The View, at 8 years old.

Angelina auditioned for America's Got Talent The Champions at 13 years old. She made it just up to the final selection of the final 5 when she dropped from the competition. It wasn't that she wasn't good enough to be in the final 5, but it was because she refused to sign with an AGT affiliated label, should she win. She knew very well what production hungry labels could do to her music. She even turned down Disney.

At 14, Angelina signed with Republic Records. Republic gave her complete artistic control as well as control over the performances she would make. She turned 17 on January 10, 2023, and will graduate from high school after the spring semester. From then on, she will embark on her full-time professional career. She's been working closely with Republic on her first album under their label. It's likely that it will drop shortly after her graduation.

- The Barefoot Princess -

(From her book, television and radio interviews, and podcasts made between 2014-2015. Includes excerpts from her diary made that day in 2012.)

Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.

Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human – it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”

From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

"She is so mature...", "for a 9 year old, it is amazing!"
Very true. Moreover, I believe it is phenomenal regardless of age - even if you compare her to older, accomplished professionals.

While there are many people who taught themselves to sing, Angelina's process at such a young age is very rare which begins with having a perfect ear. My best guess for her process is to begin by listening to a song and understanding the story and emotion of the song. Angelina then creates her version, in her head, and then begins to vocalize her arrangement as she hears it in her head. Her choices for the arrangement and for her vocal choices are nothing short of genius. Thankfully she has the talent to convey her version of the story and the emotion of the song to us lucky listeners.

I understand that Angelina has worked for several hours a day on her voice, and still does. She may make it look easy, but she is TOTAL concentration when she sings.

@Destitute Then you have to ask Angelina :)

Destitute

@Robert Silva Yeah I know--been there done that. Using plosives is a special technique. You don't just pick it up by listening to recordings.

@Destitute Angelina is no ordinary singer - she sang her first song snippet at age 1 1/2 and taught herself how to sing starting at age 2 by going through youtube on her mother's tablet and listening to the great jazz legends. She has never had a steady vocal coach. The only vocal advice she has gotten is how to not damage her voice - if you want to see how Angelina works - here is a rehearsal video of her at age 9 with her band at the time and only other people in the room are her mother and grandmother (who shot the video) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAkZDAXJA4E
