The lyrics of "Pie Jesu" by Angelis are in Latin and are a part of the Requiem Mass, which is a liturgy for the dead. In the song, the singer asks for mercy (Pie Jesu) from Jesus (Jesu) for the sins of the world (Qui tollis peccata mundi) and requests peace for those who have passed away (Dona eis requiem). The repetition of the lyrics emphasizes the theme of mercy, peace, and eternal rest. The use of Latin in the lyrics gives a timeless quality and solemnity to the song.
The second part of the song includes Agnus Dei, which means "Lamb of God." The singer asks for mercy again from Jesus, who is often referred to as the Lamb of God in Christian theology. The repetition of the phrase "dona eis requiem" also emphasizes the message of peace and eternal rest.
Overall, "Pie Jesu" is a powerful and emotional piece that captures the themes of mercy, peace, and eternal rest in the context of the Requiem Mass. The use of Latin in the lyrics gives a timeless quality to the song and adds to its reverential tone.
