Born on 27th April 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Peebles was discovered as a talent by Gene "Bowlegs" Miller of Hi Records during a 1968 trip to sit in singing with him at a Memphis, Tennessee, nightclub. A popular local bandleader, Miller was known for also helping other musicians, such as members of the Hi Rhythm Section, get their starts in the Memphis music industry. Peebles soon began writing and singing hits for the label, cowriting with label staff songwriter Don Bryant, whom she married in 1974. Peebles released a number of commercially successful and critically well received albums produced by Willie Mitchell on Hi Records throughout the 1970s, until the rise of disco in the late 1970s took her music out of the limelight. Hi Records was sold in 1977, but Peebles reunited with Willie Mitchell in 1989 to produce her comeback album, Call Me.
Slipped Tripped And Fell In Love
Ann Peebles Lyrics

What you had in mind
But I said to myself, baby
You're gonna just waste your time
But somehow during the night
Things started
And I found myself (found myself)
I slipped (tripped) fell in love
Fell in love with you, baby
I said I slipped, tripped
Fell in love, fell in love
Getting stuck on you, baby
Was the last thing I had in mind
But now you got me wanting you, baby
Want your love all the time
When you touch me, baby
(Oh, baby) I just lose control
And I find myself baby
Wanting more of you down in my soul
I slipped (tripped) fell in love
Fell in love with you, baby
I slipped (tripped) fell in love
Fell in love with you, baby
I know you did like that
I slipped (tripped) fell in love
Fell in love with you, baby
I slipped (tripped) fell in love
Fell in love with you, baby
The lyrics to Ann Peebles's song Slip Tripped and Fell in Love describe the singer's experience of falling in love unexpectedly. In the beginning, she appears doubtful and hesitant, acknowledging that she knew what the person had in mind but initially thought it was a waste of time. However, during the night, something changed, and she found herself giving love away again. The imagery of slipping and tripping emphasizes the impulsive and accidental nature of her attraction, suggesting that it wasn't a premeditated decision.
The chorus emphasizes the strength of her feelings, despite her skepticism at the outset. The repetition of "I slipped, tripped, fell in love" emphasizes the particular circumstances of her love, emphasizing the sudden and unexpected nature of it. She emphasizes that "getting stuck" on someone was out of her control, suggesting that her attraction was inexorable. The final lines of the chorus confirm that her feelings were indeed sincere and clarifies her earlier doubts.
The final lines of the song emphasize her conviction and reinforce the idea that falling in love was an accident that could happen to anyone. She knows that her experience isn't unique, and that others will likely slip, trip, and fall in love as well. The uplifting and optimistic tone of the song reflects the joy and excitement of being in love, and the upbeat tempo reinforces the idea that falling in love is a positive and exciting experience.
