@Who CaresThat is a great point. We see Annette having her "Avatar: The Last Airbender" moment when she consults her Afro-Carribean spirits of her ancestors. She has a whole community of support to rely upon as the source of her strength.

Meanwhile, Richter gets... angry, I guess? During the lakeside battle and this triggers his getting his magical mojo back but it's absolutely knackered and deflated by really cringey juvenile dialogue - do better next season, writers!

I do like how Richter has flashes of the women who are important in his life - his mother Julia Belmont, his adoptive mother Tera Renard, and his adopted sister Maria. This is his community of support, and the dialogue should've been handled better with Richter coming to realize that yes, he's not alone and never was, and this is what caused him to regain his connection to his magic, to his female ancestor Sypha's gift to his lineage.

I really like your point that having that emotional support system, a sense of community and family with women as an integral backbone, is not a sign of weakness but his greatest strength.

I really hope next season showcases young Richter arriving in France following his mother Julia's death and Tera adopting him and welcoming him into her little family and raising him as a son and the adoptive brother alongside Maria. Because they really should've done this earlier before Tera was turned at the end of the season finale.

@ulmeyda16 people here are saying that she's way more interesting than Richter, so that's kind of bad writing. Balancing it to have an equal amount of screen time seems to be a issue.

Not to mention that if it were to be a proper adaptation, Maria should be the one in the spotlight. But i digress on that point, as with 90% of Netflix stuff released, it should be expected that adapting the source material is not going to be a priority.

Just watched Nocturne last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm about as diehard of a Castlevania fan as they come, and pretty much my first thought when they said her name was "Oh cool, they gave her agency!" followed immediately by "I bet the neckbeards are LOSING it..."

Annette in the games suffers from the fate most women in the series share, to only be kidnapped by the villain and be rescued by our hero. Or be the love interest.

Sure Shannoa and Charlotte exist, but they are the exception to a norm that applies to every other

Unlike Sypha, Yoko and Maria, who despite being rescued exist outside of being damsels and actually play a role in the story (though Yoko is debatable with how much she gets knocked out for most of the games she is in and Maria is barely in the story beyond giving Alucard a story item and crushing on a guy she met that evening), Annette barely exists outside of telling Richter to not die and a boss fight that fells like a redo of the SOTN Succubus

I'm being generous when I say 90% of the people whining haven't even played this particular game, and if they did, they probably wouldn't have remembered her name a year ago, because white Annette was a massive nothingburger of a character who had no fandom. Like, white Isaac had fans (of his teeny tiny pants, which is a legitimate reason that I will defend mildly) and I'm still glad they did their own thing, but there's not a fig leaf of good faith here.

Annette is great I love her. Appreciate you’re coverage on her character. My best friend and I are both Haitian and loved her a lot. I really liked Richter too. I think you’re being too hard on him lol, but I get what you’re saying. I don’t think it was arrogance that was his problem but more that he thought his mother and the Belmont’s were infallible. Also I think one aspect I really like about him is how Richter losing his connection to magic, was him losing his connection to his ancestors in Sypha, the woman who brought magic to his family. I interpreted his call to power to be him defining himself what a “Belmont” or what “Masculinity “ means. I felt it was less of him stepping up to his duty, but accepting his fear and vulnerability, but trying his best in spite of it. Basically he needed to accept his more emotional side to regain access to the feminine side of his ancestry. That’s at least what I got from that scene where he saw a flash of all the women in his life. I kinda like that, too many people calling him a “bitch” or lame for being “emasculated” for not being more of a traditional hero and I wasn’t really a fan of those takes. I do think Annette is stronger though especially because her arc felt more complete, I’m hoping Richter gets more development in S2 though.

"Infallible" is DEFINITELY the word I'd use if I could go back in time to re-record this video. I also really like that association you made with Sypha regarding what Richter could do to allow vulnerability from his support network. There's just a lot of instances in the scenes featured in episodes 6 and 7 that show me he doesn't quite get it yet because of his association with being a Belmont while Annette clearly does. I'm hoping he can cut through all that noise in Season 2.

If I may also jump in, I think the differences between how the two handle their trauma come from the systems they are placed under. I believe the video aptly goes through how Annette being born into slavery shapes the way she responds to trauma. However, I believe Richter’s response to his trauma is heavily shaped by having to live under patriarchy. He believes that he has to shoulder his trauma on his own because he is a man and sees reliance on community as weakness.

I absolutely adore Annette, the earth manipulation made her unique from the speakers like Sypha who never used earth manipulation in the show. I think Annette needed to see that people are different and that not everyone deals with trauma like she does, so Richter acted as a good foil to her. As someone with anxiety disorder, I felt a lot of sympathy for Richter and his urge to run from Olrox despite not wanting to run. I hope to see Annette and Richters dynamic continue to grow and evolve as they see each other being strong and brave in different ways.

I played the Rondo of Blood game and I completely forgot Annette was in it, that's how memorable the original character is (I dunno about the remake, I only played the original), they did a good thing for the series. Maria is the memorable character from that game because she's basically easy mode once you unlock her.

Regarding Richter: if they follow his arc from the games it's obvious that all his problems are a set up for later, he gets possessed/mind-controlled after Rondo of Blood and in Symphony of The Night Alucard and Maria (and Annette in the series I imagine) have to go and save him when he goes to hide in the old Dracula's castle so his issues with coping with trauma might be the mental weakness that makes it happen. My guess is that there will be a time skip after they deal with Bathory during which Alucard goes around killing vampires and then when he returns finds all the three humans gone and for some reason there is monster activity in the old Dracula castle.

Oh, by the way: Rondo of Blood wasn't a PC game, it's just that for some reason the console it was made for was called PC Engine in Japan. In the US they renamed it TurbograFX 16 or something like that. I know, it's confusing but then again in Japan the NES was technically called "Nintendo Family Computer".

I always hold my breath when a black character hits a popular show such as this and I can honestly say they done great by her.
Also I loved that they touched on a past that isn't widely spoken about in the fiction circle, the Caribbean or West Indian character.

Too many times we get a generic Jamaican accented character that just to be an NPC. So I'm glad she's a main character, black, strong and has to be seen.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Firstly: I’m very much Team Maria. I like Annette a lot, but it felt like Maria had more of an arc and had more to change, whereas Annette was largely solid from the word go. Richter is definitely the weakest of the trio, his plot arc kinda got fumbled and rushed some due to Netflix Netflixing up the season length (grumble), and with everything the show had to do and establish, his story didn’t get the time needed to breathe.

I will say though that it sounds like they didn’t adapt Annette. They made an entirely different character that just happens to have the same name, with little-to-none of the traits or plot elements in common with the character in the game (of her potential romantic pairings, I think her and Richter places a rather distant third…). It’s a bit like the Cassandra Cain character in the Birds of Prey movie, they gave a completely new character a familiar name.

Of course, the difference is that Cassandra Cain in the comics is one of the best characters ever damn it, and Annette could easily be discarded. But honestly, if you’re doing an adaptation and don’t want to adapt a character, I’d much rather writers just not adapt that character, rather than paste in that character’s name over a new, great character…

They turned Anette from a basic damsel in distress (one of many in her very game) to a really cool and interesting former slave with ties to her home land. As someone who has actually played the games (unlike the people who complain about this) I really enjoyed the change. And any time I see African (diaspora) (or any other foreign) culture represented (in this case she calls Ogun, Orunmila, Papa Legba and uses vèvès) it makes me excited.

I am actually kinda annoyed any time they make Elizabeth Bathory a villain though, all the myths of her supposed evil deeds are very exaggerated and are very likely smear campaign by neighboring lords to take her land because she was a widow and a woman.

I've not gone through all your videos, but the changes in Invincible would be interesting. Making William, Invincible's friend, gay from the beginning instead of this weird coming out subplot, which I guess for it being the 90s was about the best we were gonna get, was a nice change. There's lots of little changes like this that sand off the edges of an amazing comic.

What I don't get is the fact that Orlox seemed to fall in love with the knight so fast and that the man, who worked for the church, didn't feel any guilt or bad at all over being with not just a man but a vampire. Like it was hinted at and it looked like the show was going to have a build up then said no go right to the end game.

I really enjoyed Annette's chararcter. She has agency and she has an actual arc with a personality and motives. Thematically, Annette's arc fits in with the show's entire freedom vs. slavery narrative.

Her powers are pretty cool too (I mean, she's basically an Earthbender from Avatar: The Last Airbender) and her connections to Afro-Carribean spiritualism is neat (my wife is Brazilian and she recognized the Old Man with the Pipe aka Ogun).

There were some odd storytelling choices that the showrunners decided to go with, like killing Eduard so soon and then showcasing the past connection between Annette and Eduard in the following episode, which kinda lessened the impact of his death and eventual turning into a night creature.

Annette's arc was more satisfying than Richter's arc, in my view, because of the way they had written Richter literally running from his trauma (not that I mind this about Richter having flaws) but his shunning the spotlight kinda forced Annette into the spotlight instead. Hopefully, Richter's personality is explored a bit more in the following seasons because I did not like the juvenile dialogue of the lake battle (cool kickass animation though) where Richter got his mojo back.

I love love LOVE Annette. I didn't know she was race swapped, but from the looks of the original, I'm glad the writers did it. Watching Annette slay her slave owner in the coldest way (or hottest way lol) was not only delicious, but also gave a great sense of closure to her character. Her powers and fighting style were amazing. And her overall character and will to fight and care for those around her was amazing to witness.

Now, I like richter as well, but you are absolutely correct that Annette is more compelling. Looking back I honestly would've liked juste and richter having a heart to heart and fighting together in the end. It would've redeemed juste and it would've helped richter grow rather than just saying her had to fulfill his duty as a Belmont.

Overall, nocturne is a wonderful follow up, and I'm so hyped for Alucard's return. Especially emitter that entrance in the finale lol.

Game Annette: one of the 4 women Richter has to save while exploring the castle while on his was to defeating the vampire lord
Series Annette: a vampire huntress who uses her african lineage to hunt for her vampire slaveowner.
One of these is MUCH better.
Not only have people who complain about Annette not played the games, even people who played the games forget she's there. Annette is the reason Richter goes to the castle, but then he runs into Maria who actually fights with him. Anette is one of 3 damsels in distress. She's barely a character. I love seeing unused folklore in media, I was happy to see Annette's usage of african deities.

Yeah being a black fan, for me personally, seeing a talented and capable black character repurposed from essentially from a blank slate is always a delight that engages me more.

While we're at it. Drolta shouldve stayed the main villain. For the first few episodes i thought SHE was erzsabet battory and drolta was just her vampire name.

Personally I would have prefered her to be her own character instead of co-opting another character. All it does is give people room to complain which has some merit. If she was her own character instead of co-opting another fewer people would be complaining about it. We would get a whole new character and not have another character who was white first. My biggest problem with the writing of this series is no one calls Annette out when she gets her friend killed and Belmonte has no reason for her to be in his power of friendship/people I love to protect scene. She has every reason to lose her cool but the consequence is her friend dies because of her. I understand Richtor telling her it wasnt her fault because he probably had to tell himself that to justify him getting his mother killed and he sees similar trauma happening in the moment and want to be helpful in the moment but as far as I remember no one knows her backstory or who that vampire was in the moment. Someone should have at least asked "what was that back there?" Or "Who was that? Why did you lose it? This was supposed to be a recon mission?". Without being held accountable and with people enabling her along with most of her character being angry and my way or the highway. It gives vibes of poorly written hollywood girl boss/strong woman writing when there is more depth there(there is a differwnce between a strong well written woman and how hollywood potrays strong women characters incase someone reading this wasnt aware). So I understand some viewers being upset at her character. Then when it comes to Belmontes moment she's been very mean to him throughout the series and he's known her for what 2 days? Why is she there? Is it his hegemonic need to protect, and if so then why is it the next time he sees her they all of a sudden have googly eyes? It just seems like the writers forgot to plant seeds of a relationship properly and wrote it in last minute. Because he has no reason to be into her beyond him wanting the booty. Let alone her to show up under his cherished loved ones that he needs to protect. I did like the series and most of what they did with Annette and Belmonte but some things could have been handled better. Maybe if they had another 2 to 4 episodes to work with not just 8. 24:39

So it's not necessary. She's not a Mary Sue, she is not a damsel, she's a flawed heroine with a great backstory, motivation, and arc that fits the story - with great use of show, don't tell. Writers also probably think they're going to have only 2 seasons as the longer these drag on the lesser the quality like S4 of Castlevania and Sex Education

Nocturne is not for kids, hence why the writing is more subtle. For adults, it is clear that Annette made an error. It does not need 20 minutes of being pointed out.
The attack between the two was also hinted, but subtly. The blushing was just the first non-subtle expression and you missed the hints.

actually... up until i watched this video Annette was my favorite but with what u said about Richter... he's now my favorite because with knowledge of how Richter is more of a tragedy protagonist than a triumphant one what u said about him really makes what he's going to do in the future make sense with some tragic irony that's just soooo funny and i now understand how the writers may handle his cataclysmic fall from grace as he potentially fcks over the world

I’m very new to the Castlevania series and only picked up interest after watching the original series and playing the Castlevania inspired Deadcells DLC. I haven’t fully finished the new series but I’m enjoying all the characters thoroughly even without knowledge of the original games. One question I had is now that there’s two versions of Annette (the game and the show) which one is canon?

The series and games have different canons.
Even the original series makes SUCH drastic changes to the original it can't be canon to the games. They're separate.

I didn’t play the Castlevania games but I did watch the first season of the show and did not keep up with the series. I got a YouTube fanvid with Olrox and Mizrak in bed and I an always willing to support content with queer characters and I was there for the whole show. I loved seeing women of color with agency because Drolta was that girl as well (her fits were exquisite). Race bending Annette made her story more compelling and interesting of course misogynoir would also raise its head. I don’t feel sorry for not one of them. I have had to be content with boring white women’s voices for far too long let interesting black women shine for a change.

Season 3 and 4 of the Castlevania series have a crew of four vampire queens, two of which (Striga and Morana) are wives. They have some really sweet moments. Morana has dark skin and Striga is buff af (And they have a pretty happy ending.) 😊 If you're curious

I love how the show runners have a knack for elevating characters above and beyond the source material, Annette is such a fantastic addition to the cast.
Also your point about how Ritcher overcomes his trauma in a less healthier way to Annette might actually play into how Nocturne is going to adapt his role in Symphony of the Night, if they go down that route.

Yeah, that part was so cringe, ugh. They were so close to getting it with Richter's character. They even showed flashes of Richter remembering the women important to his life - Julia, Tera, and Maria. All females, all power spellcasters in their own right. The Belmont lineage traced their magic abilities to their female Speaker ancestor Sypha. I was like, come on, Richter. Do better next season, writers!

While I think your Annette take was absolutely on target, I don't quite agree with you Richter take. While I agree that the mental block wasn't well communicated, Richter running when faced with Olrox was absolutely fine. Richter's mom in the prime of her life couldn't take him out with all her magic, what chance did Richter stand? I also think that while Richter feels the duty of being a Belmont (killing vampires) and protecting the people he cares about.

I quite like how it contrasted with Annette's motivations in that scene. Their respective experiences (cultural, personal, interpersonal) inform their actions when facing Orlox. He ran because he couldn't face his mother's Killer, as death and personal danger were alien to him. Annette didn't grow up with that luxury. Richter travelled the Atlantic and only had Tera and Maria as support; Annette had her entire Maroon nation. They have been raised to deal with their trauma's differently because of the contexts, their relationships to their ancestors, etc. Richter fleeing felt fitting just as Anette's anger at him did - it was natural to each person's circumstances.

The writers are setting up the Pair as a couple and I want to see how they do this in season 2. Richter is a a little less exciting than Annette, so I want to see how they make him compelling as a love interest.Perhaps having to work through his feelings on Orlox (who is pretty sympathetic for someone who orphans a 10 year old and gloats over it) and his struggles between accepting liberators politics versus his own personal pain?
Regardless, I want to see more Annette like she is here: clever, confident, and a vampire-killing badass

Watched it this week and I thought it wasn't bad, I think I do prefer the original season 1, though. Nocturne kind of suffers slightly from pacing and the overuse of the F-bombs. Yes I do realise it's not for kids but I think they just paint a picture of characters wanting to be a bit too edgy. Anyway, these are only a few complaints, and I'll definitely watch season 2.

So many people have been trying to spin the show as "woke" pandering for adding real world political history and making the story interesting simply because the games of rondo of blood and symphony of the night didn't include them even though most people consider the story in the games convoluted and weak makes me recoil. Like Annette in the games wasn't even the same character in different versions of ROB yet there needs to be a justification for her being black like what about her in the games can she only be portrayed as white? I have only played the Nintendo version of the Castlevania games haven't played any of the recent 3d games yet, but I'll say this the story in majority of the games are super bland and even my favorite of the series Aria of Sorrow is also bland. As a black person I hate when character are race/gender swap because I understand there is cultural and historical complexity. I would usually avoid media like that which is why I refuse to watch of the recent Disney movies despite all my black friends going to watch them. Honestly for me Isaac carried Castlevania for me and he was far more intriguing than Sypha and Trevor. I can say Castlevania is the first media in which race swapping benefited the characters and added to their complexity lets be real the games are fucking swallow when it comes story and we just play it to kill demons and vampires.

And I honestly can't think of any examples yet, but I have noticed that people start "critiquing" when the cast isn't all Lily white.
For example, wow, sure a lot of criticism about how Disney Princesses/main characters are adorkable now that they're not all blue eyes and blonde.

In an adaptation, people expect to see the thing they liked adapted to the screen. Every adaptation creates expectations.

In this case, nothing was adapted besides Richter and Maria visuals. Everything else was changed or is new, from the setting, to motivations, to the personality of characters. It is called Castlevania in name only, so the reason for complaints are way beyond changing someone's skin color.

I politely but firmly disagree with your interpretation of Richter and his trauma.
As a White guy who had something of a similar-ish trauma for 20+ years and only came to term with the reality of it a few years ago (after saying it was "fine" to my family and friends for years and not disclosing the full details of what actually happened), I can tell you that his trauma is actually quite realistic and interesting.
I feel that we, as people, don't resonate with characters in the same way because of our different history. But I wholeheartedly disagree that Richter's story would be "lesser" than Annette's (who is also probably my favorite/second favorite character of the show).

It's just... Different.
But I absolutely can see why Richter's story resonated with me more, while Annette's story resonated with you more.

After the 1st Castlevania anime left out Grant entirely & completely ruined Hector's character I had zero hope for Nocturne.
I for one think it was not faithful to the games. It had good animation but these two character changes were awful.
On topic though while I'm not watching Nocturne Annette seems much improved from her original version. This version of Annette would be cool as a playable character in a videogame. Never been much of a fan of Richter though.

I didn't really care for Annette as a character, her lack of character flaws that the writers were willing to explore made her a lot less interesting than Richter in my opinion. Like, Annettes inability to control her anger when seeing Vaublanc at the château was just as if not more harmful than Richters inability to control his fear when faced with Olrox yet it was barely even adressed. Don't know if I agree with the whole support system angle of your analysis either, Annette wasn't really shown being anymore willing or capable of relying on emotional support beyond her connecting to her ancestors for a pep talk, there was just this implication that she had already dealt with and moved past what Richter was dealing with by the time the story started.

No one will have any problem with the fact that Annatte should have more to offer. I agree with the majority on the fact that Annette in the games is quite flat and cliche and needed a bit more substance on her character. But this iteration just made a 360 rotation on her original counterpart, going from being a noble woman to a slave. The fans are pissed off because that's not Annete, and if she was an original character made only for the show that would have been fine and no one would have complained. Also, it doesn't help that they give her such an insufferable and irritating personality, behaving like a spoiled brat and demanding others to listen only to her own opinion just because she was a slave. She believed she had suffered more than any other person and she feels entitled to have more than others. This iteration of Annette is nothing more than a "mockbuster" Isaac, just a low budget and quick produced product created to exploit the publicity of another major product with a similar name or subject.

Speaking of Isaac, the reason he's liked by the fans, despite having quite a few changes (he never had a slave background, in the original game he had a background of fleeing from the inquisition), but still respecting the source materials (he was a forge master both in the game and in the anime), is because he's actually a well crafted and interesting character. He had a thought past a slave, but he wasn't demanding, he never asked Dracula to give him more than Hector just because he was a slave, all he wanted was loyalty. Because Isaac believes in unconditional loyalty and love toward his master and, in return, his master should reciprocate with appreciation. His first master proved himself unworthy of loyalty because he sadistically tortured Isaac. But Dracula, his second master, was the only person who respected him and appreciated his service. Isaac views Dracula as both a master and the only true friend he ever had, and will kill any threats to him without a second thought. Dracula, in turn, acknowledged Isaac's pure loyalty, calling him the best of his species and saved his life when they were cornered.
