That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Refrain
Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel! O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, And order all things, far and nigh; To us the path of knowledge show, And cause us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel! O come, Desire of nations, bind
Annie Haslam's song O Come O Come Immanuel is a hymn that expresses the supplication of the Israelites for the appearance of the Son of God - Immanuel - who would come to redeem them from their captivity. The hymn has a somber mood and a reflective tone as it describes the people of Israel who mourn in lonely exile, waiting for their savior to rescue them. The hymn is essentially a prayer that asks for divine intervention from God to bring peace and hope to those who are oppressed.
In the first verse, the hymn describes the captivity of Israel and their sad state in exile. The Israelites are longing for Immanuel to appear and ransom them from their captivity. The second verse refers to Immanuel as the Wisdom from on high - the one who will order all things both far and near. The hymn prays for guidance and direction so that the people can be led in the paths of wisdom. The third verse addresses Immanuel as the desire of nations, the one who will bring unity and peace to the world. The hymn asks for an end to all kinds of conflicts, strife and envy and the establishment of heaven's peace.
