No it wouldn't. The brain in this tank is supplied with oxygen via the liquid, otherwise it would no longer be alive. The urge to breathe is triggered by the rising level of CO2 in the body, which can no longer rise as the brain is already supplied with oxygen. But still a very scary imagination to be trapped inside this brain that wants you to breath all the time but you can't. Like a never ending drowning. That gives me the chills!

This scene is horrifying and painful if you understand how the nerves work. The water that the nervous system is in is bubbling so its safe to assume that the liquid is moving inside the tank. So the exposed nerves are constantly feeling that motion. Imagine being whipped around a rollecoaster but this is happening constnantly and in small increments.

There was a test at a college a while back, where students were put into a room and deprived of all their senses. They would remember past events, make mind games to entertain themselves and such. Apparently, a darkness would set in. A sort of mind emptiness. The students said the darkness was the most disturbing.

Looking at this part in the movie reminded me of that. The shock would be the worst I suppose, but maybe Murphy's situation wasn't that bad. You wouldn't have to worry about the aches and pains of your body.

He'll, I'd go through that if I could be a badass robot in the end.

What seems like a gratuitous, somewhat superfluous scene is actually one of the most poignant and well thought out scenes of the franchise.
It's the entire essence of Robocop in general and Kane in particular. It's his desire for revenge and his need for the drugs that gives him the drive to live (much like Murphy whose drive was his son) while the others were all turned hopelessly insane by the process and immediately ended their own existences (and pain) as soon as they could.
Powerful stuff.
