Monolith
Archael Lyrics

Kodama rattles in the
Cypresses
Spirit totems, monoliths
Old growth remnants of a
Permanent past
And to think we thought
So gone
So distinct
So vast
Ghost feathers in the
Forests
Pushing up the hill
Beneath the weight
The earth a cinder upon
Our backs
Impossible to shake
I hear them dying
But I can't stop the saws
I can't make the giants
Grow
Their boughs are tired
The ground is sour now
Where did their brothers go
Kent-calling to the
Blackness
Knock-knocking in the
Ashes
Echoes fading into
Silence
Spirit totems, evidence
Lost in time
Elimination by design
So gone
So extinct
So resigned
Ghost bones in the
Bottomlands
Spirits crushed beneath
The weight
The earth a cinder upon
Our backs
Impossible to shake
I hear them calling
But I can't stop the sun
Can't slow the fading
Dusk
I hear my brothers
Out past the hardwoods
Flocking
Blackwater, black blood
A quilting of lichens to
Cover me
Enshrouded in soil
I know I could be
So gone
So at ease
Pillows of mosses to
Comfort me
Where my brothers are
Flocking
I know I could be
So safe
So asleep
So relaxed So extinct
The lyrics of Archael's song "Monolith" reflect on the destruction of nature and the loss of ancient forests. The song begins with a reference to Kent, which could symbolize a call for a resemblance or recognition of the importance of preserving nature. The mention of Kodama, which are spirits in Japanese folklore that reside in trees, highlights the significance of trees and their interconnectedness with spiritual beliefs.
The lyrics go on to describe spirit totems and monoliths, representing the remnants of old growth forests and the permanence of the past. However, the songwriter expresses disbelief in the lasting power of these natural wonders, acknowledging their vulnerability to destruction. The powerful imagery of ghost feathers, forests, and the weight of the Earth upon our backs emphasizes the profound impact and inevitability of deforestation.
The chorus expresses frustration and helplessness, admitting the inability to stop the destruction of the forests and the disappearance of these ancestral giants. The second verse focuses on the consequences of deforestation, mentioning ghost bones and crushed spirits beneath the weight of the Earth. The singer hears a call for help from these disappearing forests but feels powerless to intervene.
The song's tone shifts in the final verse, with the singer contemplating finding solace in nature's embrace. The lyrics suggest becoming a part of the land, covered in lichens and enshrouded in soil. The desire for safety, peace, and to ultimately become extinct represents a longing to escape the devastating reality of deforestation and find peace within the natural world.
Overall, "Monolith" serves as a lamentation for the loss of ancient forests and a plea for the preservation of nature before it is too late.
