Fluorescent Adolescent
Arctic Monkeys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when you used to be a rascal?

Oh, the boy's a slag, the best you ever had
The best you ever had is just a memory and those dreams
Weren't as daft as they seem, not as daft as they seemed
My love, when you dream them up

Flicking through a little book of sex tips
Remember when the boys were all electric?
Now when she's told she's gonna get it
I'm guessing that she'd rather just forget it
Clinging 'til I'm getting sentimental
Said she wasn't going but she went still
Likes her gentlemen not to be gentle
Was it a Mecca Dauber or a betting pencil?

Oh, the boy's a slag, the best you ever had
The best you ever had is just a memory and those dreams
Weren't as daft as they seem, not as daft as they seemed
My love, when you dream them up

Oh, Flo, where did you go?
Where did you go? Where did you go? Oh

You're falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
Just sounding it out
But you're not coming back again

You're falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
You were just sounding it out
But you're not coming back again

You used to get it in your fishnets (falling about)
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness (you took a left off Last Laugh Lane)
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole (we're sounding it out)
Is everything as pretty as the past though?

That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco (but you're not coming back again)
Remember when you used to be a rascal? Oh

Overall Meaning

The song “Fluorescent Adolescent” by the Arctic Monkeys is a nostalgic take on the changes brought about by growing up and leaving behind a wild youth. The first verse speaks of the evolution in the singer’s taste in attire and behavior, from fishnets to a night dress, and from “naughty nights” to “niceness.” The chorus then reminds us that memories of the past may seem foolish in hindsight, but those dreams were not as daft as they seemed at the time. The second verse takes a wistful look into the past, referencing a book of sex tips and electric boys, and ends with a reference to a Mecca Dauber, a bingo hall marker pen, or a betting pencil that the singer wears as a necklace. The final verse portrays the singer “falling about” and unable to return to the past where everything was in “order in a black hole.”

***** The Song, in my opinion, is about about a relationship got boring. So to spice up her life again she cheats on her significant other. I found a full explanation online, here it is
" You used to get it in your fishnets
(Which is sexy)

Now you only get it in your night dress
(Typical and boring)

Discarded the naughty nights with niceness
(Less sex more jsut being nice, perhaps having tea with the neighbours or something shit like that.)

Landed in a very common crisis
(This happens to most relationships)

Everything's in order in a black hole
(Relationship is comapred to a black hole its in order but its lifeless and dull and sucks everything that ever was into it)

Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
(It was better in the past)

That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
(Looking for more kicks in life than the same old boring relationship like adding more tabasco to the bloody mary)

Remember when he used to be a rascal?
(thats what he used to be like)

Oh that boy's a slag
The best you ever had
The best you ever had

(This is the woman looking back on the man and waht he used to be like this is apprent because of the last line of the first verse which tells the woman to remember.)

Is just a memory and those dreams
Not as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem
My love when you dream them up...

(What he used to be like is just a memory and she dreams that he'll be the same again there not that daft but shes just making them up.)

Flicking through a little book of sex tips
(Trying to spice things up)

Remember when the boys were all electric?
(When she used to get all the boys)

Now when she tells she's gonna get it
(she thinks hses going to get sex)

I'm guessing that she'd rather just forget i
(sarcastic comment by the narrator she dosent want to forget it she wants to live it)

Clinging to not getting sentimental
(she dosent want to cling on for someone, settle down, she wants to relive the hayday when she was a 'fluroscent adolescent'.)

Said she wasn't going but she went still
(Perhaps she goes to cheat on her fella?)

Likes her gentlemen to not be gentle
(Everything in this relationship is just too comfy she wants excitement)

Was it a megadobber or a betting pencil?
(Ha don't know what this is about. But the first thing i thought of was that it was some sort of sex game or something and i dont know here the megadobebr or the betting pencil are going. Maybe shes comparing the size of her partners dick to this new fellas. No idea)

Falling about
(Shes drunk)

You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
(Turns down the road and laughs. She's ahd the last laugh at her boring fella)

You just sounded it out
(She just got it all out of her by having a bit of excitment with another guy not leading the boring drab lifestyle)

You're not coming back again.
(However she's not doing again... she dosen't need to shes had her fun its back to her normal life.)"

The lyrics to the song make my argument  for me.

@johnstreet8013

I was the clown who dove onto the bonnet of the car in this video. The one that looks like a scary Ronald Mcdonald. This video was fimed over 2 days and holds very fond memories for me.
Rod Woodruff was the stunt coordinator
Brian Nickles played the robber fighting it out with Steve Graham. I am very sad to say that both of these two great blokes are no longer with us.
Brian was always hilarious and used to have me in fits of laughter. He tried to get me to go into a McDonalds with a half full whisky bottle in this outfit and start screaming that I was Johnald McDonald. Ronalds brother and Ronald had stolen my idea and had me committed to an asylum....
😂
I think thats where I might have ended up if I did. Anyway this was aimed at the Empire flour mill S.E London.
The second car that I drove in the chase was a Jaguar which was apparenly used by the Police to take the Krays to the Police station after the shooting of Jack Cornell??
The other stunt perfotmers were
Terry Cade
Steve Walsh
Tony Van Silver
The rest where background guys picked for the part for their looks.
