River's invitation
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been well across the country
And I've stayed in every town
You see, I'm trying to find my baby
And he ain't nowhere around
Can you understand?

You know which way I'm headin'
If my baby can't be found, oh, yeah
Well, I spoke to the river
And the river, the river spoke back to me
It said, "Oh, you look so lonely
And so much full of misery
Yes, you do now
If you can't find your baby
Come on, girl, and make your home with me
Oh, yeah"

I don't want to leave him
No, I know, I know he's still alive
And someday, I'm going to find him
And he's gonna take me for a ride
Yes, he will now
And then we'll live forever and ever and ever
Forever and ever among the tides
Oh, yes, we will
Just in case I don't find him
I'm gonna take that river's invitation
River's invitation

Oh, oh, the river
Oh, oh, the river
Oh, the river, yeah

Oh, river's invitation
Yeah, the river

Overall Meaning

"River's Invitation" is a soulful ballad by Aretha Franklin, with lyrics that speak of a woman in search of her lost lover. The singer of the song has traveled across the country looking for her baby, but to no avail. She talks to the river, which speaks to her in response. The river offers her comfort, inviting her to make her home with it if she can't find her baby. Even though the singer doesn't want to leave him because she believes he's still alive, she accepts the river's invitation just in case she can't find him. The song merges religious and secular symbolism, suggesting that the river is a metaphor for baptism, cleansing, and rebirth. The opening lines of the song, "I've been well across the country, and I've stayed in every town," suggest that the singer has been searching for a long time, traveling far and wide in her quest for her lost "baby".

There are several interpretations of the song, with some critics suggesting that it is about Aretha Franklin's own life and her tumultuous relationship with her father, while others argue that it's a song about a woman looking for her happiness and finding herself in the process. Whatever the interpretation, "River's Invitation" is a moving song that captures the longing, pain, and hope of a woman searching for her lost lover.

I've always loved this. It makes me feel good when I'm down (someone else feels as bad as me).

Franklin biographer David Ritz feels Atlantic chickened out titling the album "Soul '69," trolling for sales with the suggestion that Respect and Think-style items would be found inside. What was inside was wonderful, Aretha talking a bold step, two years into her Atlantic contract, fearlessly visiting jazz territory, and the album title should have shown the same bravery.

Ritz was a liar, liar liar per AF.
At least a third of the songs on her first four Atlantic and quite a few from her Columbia efforts could've fit on this album. It's more Big Maybelle blues and early soul than jazz anyway.

Robert V

yes! A true gem! Man, the full orchestra and Arethas voice just does wonderful things for the human soul! Makes it full and warm!
