Plastic Raincoats in the Pig Parade
Ariel Pink Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sky was white and black and polka dotted
It must've been an Ariel day
And all of a sudden I was allotted
The chance to go with a big parade

Oh yeah! Oh yeah!
Plastic raincoats in the pig parade
Oh yeah! Oh yeah!

Mannequins are so afraid
Don't be afraid to show your stripes
Because the mannequins is always right
Plastic raincoats in the pig parade
All over the world
Cocaine bank got the Portobello Girl
It's a Tokyo night when you feel alright
The Arkansas moon's gonna shine tonight
All over the world we're gonna do it right
So wear your plastic raincoats in the pig parade
Cause the mannequins is so afraid

The mannequins suits Lady Umbrella
March along the edge of the Thames
Then up came two or three or four Berettas
Raincoats in the big pig parade

Oh yeah! Oh yeah!
Wear your plastic raincoats in the pig parade
Oh yeah! Oh yeah!

Mannequins are so afraid
Don't be afraid to show your stripes
Because the mannequins is always right
Plastic raincoats in the pig parade
All over the world
Cocaine bank got the Portobello Girl
It's a Tokyo night when you feel alright
The Arkansas moon's gonna shine tonight
All over the world we're gonna do it right
So wear your plastic raincoats in the pig parade
Because the mannequins is so afraid

Oh yeah! Oh yeah!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ariel Pink's "Plastic Raincoats in the Pig Parade" is a surrealistic commentary on conformity and the fear of being different. With lines such as "don't be afraid to show your stripes, because the mannequins is always right" and "plastic raincoats in the pig parade," Pink is indicting the societal pressure to conform to a certain image or standard. The song suggests that even the mannequins, which are dress forms fashioned to appear as people, are afraid to be different.

The sky being described as "white and black and polka-dotted" presents a sense of confusion and disorder. However, it also highlights the unique and out-of-the-ordinary aspects of the day. The singer then describes being a part of the big parade, alluding to the idea of a mass movement or a culture of sameness that values conformity over individuality.

Throughout the song, there are references to different locales such as Tokyo and Arkansas, emphasizing that this pressure to conform is universal. In the end, Pink's lyrics suggest that being different is okay, and that one should not be afraid to stand out from the crowd.

These are the best songs! Ones that don't make any sense but are really fun to listen to

MD

It does make sense though, it's all about being yourself and letting your freak flag fly, regardless of what the frightened mannequins (normies) think. The lyrics are the best part of the song.

hguiohoi asdsad

@MD that ain't the confusing part. It's the weird noses after each 'Oh yeah' like a horse and a police siren. I can't rly say I get it but its cool though
