Ella y El
Arjona Ricardo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ella no habla inglés, y él menos español
Ella dice hola chico, él contesta hello
The song "Ella y El" by Ricardo Arjona tells the story of two individuals from opposite ends of the spectrum who fall in love despite their differences. It starts by introducing the audience to Ella, a woman from Havana who dances at Tropicana and sells kisses in a brothel. On the other hand, El is a man from New York who likes Rock music and is a Republican. Despite their different lifestyles and beliefs, the two find themselves attracted to each other.
As the verses continue, we see more of their differences. Ella is a Marxist who wants to be an artist, while El believes in the Statue of Liberty and dislikes Cubans. However, they also share some similarities — both of them have gone on vacation to Yucatan, for example. Eventually, through the power of love, they find their way to each other. They even move to Paris together, where they live happily as a couple, mocking the planet and its vices by walking hand in hand down the Champs-Élysées. The song's central message is that love can conquer all differences, whether they are ideological or cultural.
