Canudos
Armahda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dry is the land
Where the church needs wood
And the saints are men
The cross we hold in hands
We chart the holy songs
In the face of death

Run, run, soldier run
If you have legs run, run, run
Who wants to stay?
Who wants to fight?
You may stay but you will surely die
Poems will be written
The republic will be heard
The land will lie in ruins
Always burned by the sun

San Sebastian
San Sebastian
San Sebastian will not return
Why should we wait here for the day?

Staring at the sky forever
Waiting for the rain to fall
How much time it doesn′t matter
We'll wait for the rain to fall

Over our heads the silence will end
The cross and the drought rule the land
Welcome to the resistance come
Welcome to the resistance come
Send them away!

Tell me how the story ends
Dry their bones, no graves for them

Through certain death the silence did end
The mob and the cross rule the land
Welcome to the resistance come
Welcome to the resistance come

After the fight a new day shall
It shall arise
Dust to dust
Dust to sand
And dry is the land
Dry is the land

Dry is the land
Dust to dust

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Armahda's song Canudos depict a war-ridden and barren land where the Church is in dire need of wood and the saints are nothing but men. The people hold on to the cross as they sing their holy songs in the face of death. The lyrics implore soldiers to run because those who choose to stay and fight will eventually die, leaving behind only dry bones without graves. The republic will be heard, poems will be written, but the land will lie in ruins, always burned by the sun. The lyrics mention San Sebastian, who will not return, questioning why they should wait here for the day. The people stare at the sky, forever waiting for the rain to fall, symbolizing the hope for relief from their struggles.

The song Canudos has a historical significance as it describes the war of Canudos that took place in Brazil from 1896 to 1897. This war was fought between the government and the people who had settled in the region of Canudos, which is present-day state of Bahia. The people were displeased with the government and their approach towards the people, and revolted against the government, leading to a four-offensive conflict which ended in the destruction of Canudos.

Maldita seja a República, viva a Conselheiro!
