They're Leisure Studios is in the Allen family basement. Over the last several years they have worked together on different projects and decided it was time to actually write and record together. The result is Arranged Marriage. Scott and his brother Ryan are members of Thunderbirds Are Now!, an acclaimed indie rock band that has released 2 albums on the French Kiss label. He has toured extensively in the states as well as Europe and Australia. He also released “Scott Allen and the Breakdance” a surprisingly mature album when he was 16 on the Suburban Sprawl label. Brad has recorded several albums for local acts including, Red Shirt Brigade, The Javelins, Tiny Steps, Thunderbirds Are Now!, The Recital, New Grenada and others. He played live for years with The Voyager Band and The AllTin Brothers. His self released EP called “Nifty at Fifty” was produced in 2005. This new projects is literally a mix of the old and new – which coincidently – meets somewhere in the middle. Their joint love of singer/song writers – both new and old – is reflected in their musical and lyrical approach to the songs. They wear their influences clearly on their sleeve and you’ll defiantly hear songs that that will remind you of other artists - and that’s cool with them. I agree that if people are partnership oriented and willing to keep a comfortable home together, they will have a good marriage whether it’s arranged or a love match. But if people are incompatible and/or lack chemistry, you’re basically living one long compromise with the only good being you don’t get divorced.

I read an interesting study at Psychology Today about long lasting marriages. The study concluded the following:

1). Both spouses felt s/he married a partner SLIGHTLY “above their league.” (ie, their partner was more attractive, (or intelligent or educated, more financially successful) than they thought they could reasonably attract. The criteria varied but both partners felt it. No one felt they “settled.”

2). Both partners were satisfied they received from the marriage relationship what they invested in it. The couples were either deeply involved with each other OR they were “together yet apart.” They functioned as a social unit and shared household, assets, etc., but they shared no intimacy (a true “business” relationship). Regardless of lifestyle, both partners felt they got what they gave.

3). Mutual respect. More important than love. The true sign of a doomed marriage is obvious contempt.

@Sheak Mustapha Its still Stockholm syndrome. Spend enough time with anyone and you'll develop feelings for them. Try earning that love when the other person has a choice to accept your bad side after you cant hide it anymore.
That's not love, that's called making the best of it. Maybe they would have never chose you if they knew about your other side before having to choose to spend their life with someone they really dont know yet.

Some people are so bad they need to lock it down early before their partner gets a chance to know them I guess.

Once i got the advise to have long "conversations" in any situation with the prince of my heart, even if he, as a person was fantasy at that time, this will make it easier to recognize him once he crosses my way - and it worked. While "talking" to him I got to know the man I wanted to have, so when we met real life, it was a very easy decision.

My only problem is that, this isn't how it's done in most families. My parents still want me to go infront of every family that visits to see me as a potential partner for their son, whom btw, they don't even bring along! Like if the mom and sis of that guy approve then they think of getting me in contact with the guy. Now how screwed up is that? And it becomes even more annoying when i am truly not ready for marriage and my parents want me to 'just consider' every family that shows up. It's emotionally traumatic and frankly quite insulting. I mean how can you force yourself even into thinking of something you are least interested in? This is why the divorce rate in south east asia is increasing. Omar had it just fine. The guy and the girl met BEFORE the families did and had full choice to accept or decline. So yeah, let's just say that's an easy peasy version of an arranged marriage.

If a mother or a sister approves it is a bonus, because you'll be marrying into that family and it is better to have people that already value you around, but...that doesn't mean you have to accept their son/brother just because they would like it to happen , in the end it should be your decision to accept the man's proposal or not and for that you should meet him before the engagement.

I think arranged marriages happen in Western culture too, we just don't call them "arranged marriages". But often a friend says: "hey, I know this guy. It seems very kind and he is single. Can I give him your number so you can talk to him?" When asked "how did you meet your spouse?", many people reply "through a family member or mutual friends". Now is that not an arranged marriage?

Ruth Steiner agreed, my marriage came from a friend specifically inviting him to her birthday to meet me. So when we got divorced I felt it only fair to get her to carry the paperwork between us lol. I also know plenty of other friends who have had better outcomes from having a friend introducing them to their partner. I have friends in arranged marriages who have great partners and they were allowed to say they didn’t want to marry that guy and a couple of them did just that until eventually “the one” came along. As long as there is choice including the choice not to marry and not being disowned for said choice I’m okay with it. I once asked my mum after my marriage ended which, if any of my boyfriends she and my father would have made a good marriage prospect and I did have a guy in mind that I thought would be likely who she’d suggest and I was right. At the time we started dating we had both had extremely traumatic events in relationships and we would argue easily and we decided to just be friends although we found ourselves kissing when we went somewhere as friends but for us both the trauma we had each had in our lives coloured our relationship negatively it made the thought of marriage to each other was scary but as I said we continually found ourselves kissing for many years between other relationships. To this day I wonder if we would have had a successful marriage if we had allowed ourselves to try and get past our trauma and it’s impact on us and our earlier relationship.
Well that quickly became an essay lol but I think it explains from my perspective that I agree with you as these are thoughts I’ve had and an conversation topic with my friends with arranged marriage.

My grandmother arranged my mom to marry my dad. Every time that my mom was mad at my dad, she would blame it on grandma. On the other hand my dad didn't have anybody to blame on but himself.

I liked this talk a lot! I always used to think I was open minded and that what I learned in school always had an objective background. I only just realized , while watching this video, how wrong I was. What I was taught were little scenarios, the rare cases of really unhappy arranged marriages. In my culture arranged marriages are also common and I do think that they are great. You are not being forced into something you don't want. People choosing your 'partner' are the ones that are closest to you and know you the BEST and eventually they find a really great match! Thank you for sharing your story

Love isn’t random tho. It’s a very conscientious choice. If two ppl meet by chance, and choose to form a relationship, then all the best. If they choose not to, then all the best as well. If two ppl whom are arranged to meet choose to form a relationship or not, then the same applies.

I LOVE this video! Omar and Areeba came into the restaurant that I work at and they were ridiculously nice! They have a beautiful baby girl and seem to be happily married. To see this video and hear about the journey Omar went through is so interesting. The indian chef at my job tells me about all the pictures his mom sends him for his arranged marriage and I agreed with Omar in the beginning “that’s not how love works” but after seeing this video, I understand that arranged marriage doesn’t mean “forced” and there is a chance to find love through arranged marriage!

Based on this, I think that both arranged marriages and "love" marriages are more similar than not- just in one the onus on finding the right person is on you and in the other it's on your family/matchmaker. Both have the potential to end in disaster but also to find the love of your life. I don't think it matters how you find the right person as long as they're right for you- I've found that person myself and I'm glad you did too!

I'm fine with this. This is no different than somebody setting you up, or finding somebody using a dating site. It's matching people and if they like each other, they like each other. What I object to is when somebody is forced into a marriage and disowned if they refuse to marry the person. I know a guy who I'm convinced his wife is a mail order bride. I have no problem with that because it's an agreed upon relationship and isn't abusive. Marry who want, but make sure you marry who you want.

I’m 25, going on 26 at the end of this year. Once I’m settled in my career I think I would go to a match maker if I haven’t met anyone yet. I’m not Asian or from a cultural background where this is common practice but I’ve tried online dating and in person and both to no avail. With a matchmaker, you know you’re both serious enough to go through that channel and to me, that’s one step down already. Yes I know that I’m young and I’m not saying I want to be married tomorrow, I want to start my career first, have good savings and get my own property before I think about marriage, but once I do that I’d like to enjoy me time with someone where we’re headed towards something serious.

I think it really depends. The culture I am from uses arranged marriage a lot. A lot of the older people I know who were put into arranged marriages but there is also the factor that usually if you are from a culture that practices arranged marriage, divorce is considered taboo. This is, at least, the case for my culture. Instead of divorcing you're expected to just deal with it no matter how bad it is. Arranged marriages are getting a bit better because there's more stress on putting more time into the getting-to-know-each-other process rather than deciding if you like each other based on one meeting.

Very glad that his marriage turned out well! I hope it continues to prosper!
