Ghost-Tape No. 9
At the Drive-In Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to hear them through the walls at night
Exchanging currents through modicums of pernicious lust
When tamed would always alter the future

In trance amounts played the ritual
Vacuumed the dents under a primer sky
Where a light field once held the promise of closing the sutures
But the ultimatum clots a tapeworm hymnal
Lost the ghost tape registered as number 9
It's going to be a long night comin', she said I can never turn it off
Theirs is just a long lost grudge that will never fade away

Caving the symptom of confessional
Painted in licorice forgeries
Had she dawned the seductions subdued by the handmaid's tale

One claimed complacence while the other knelt
He took the prescript off the parlor doors
Swung open but collaterals had altered the future

But the ultimatum clots a tapeworm hymnal
Lost the ghost tape registered as number 9
It's going to be a long night comin', she said I can never turn it off
Theirs is just a long lost grudge that will never fade away

He's the rule you've answered too
Locked in the omen of momentum
He pleads the fool of numbing agents
In the postmortem when it's over

You of brittle faith have failed
Speechless bereavement for the last time
Fade away, trained to fade away
Fade away, trained to fade away

But they trained you, wire-framed you
Stood you upright in position to administer the want
But they trained you, wire-framed you
Stood you upright in position to administer the night crawls

But the ultimatum clots a tapeworm hymnal
Lost the ghost tape registered as number 9

It's going to be a long night comin', she said I can never turn it off
Theirs is just a long lost grudge that will never fade away

Overall Meaning

At the Drive-In's song "Ghost-Tape No. 9" is a potent and intense song that explores themes of deceit, betrayal, and psychological manipulation. The lyrics paint a story of two individuals engaging in a relationship based on lust and desire, fueled by their desire to gratify each other's needs. However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that even though they are physically together, their connection is not sincere, and their relationship is doomed from the start.

The opening lines of the song reveal that the singer was once privy to hearing the couple's activities through the walls of their shared space. They describe the acts as "Exchanging currents through modicums of pernicious lust," emphasizing that the two are using each other for selfish reasons. However, the lyrics also hint at the potential for a future beyond their limits if they could overcome their primal desires.

The song's chorus highlights the singers' ultimate detachment and the futility of their efforts to connect on a deeper level. The "ghost tape" referred to in the lyrics can be interpreted as a metaphor for any recording or document that captures a moment in time. This metaphor could mean that the relationship was doomed from the start, and no matter what efforts were made to capture a moment of true passion, it would always be lost.

This record is better than I expected. Glad they decided to make it.

@hcsgtrplayer1

One of my favorite tracks off the album. I'm particularly in love with the bass tone on this one!

@Skippymoogoose90

To all who are still going on about Jim Wards departure, just remember it was Keeley (his replacement) who wrote this song

@__tay__6074

Probably one of the best on this album

@21Cayque12

Woah, didn't know that. It's probably my favorite one

@idonteatcheetos

Well shit, I guess Keeley wrote the best song on the album. You should keep in mind that is older fans don't blame Keeley at all. It's all Omar and Cedric's fault imo.

Look at the other songs, Omar's guitar wankery BS ruined the whole album, ghost tape no.9 is the only song that has an ounce of originality in it. Old atd-I didnt sound like Mars Volta-Lite

@protectourfreedom8221

Wow I had no idea Keely wrote this. Definitely a standout track and different sounding than the rest of the album. This one gave me hope that ATDI could still be dope after that long ass hiatus and not just rely on their catalog.

@BuyNewUnderwear311

This is that Noctourniquet Cedric.

@BuyNewUnderwear311

This song reminds me so much of TMV's live version of Trinkets Pale of Moon, and it's fucking fantastic. I hope they slow down their next album. More Non-Zero Possibility vibes.

@Airwavehero

I am really loving this album. you can defiantly hear the ghost of volta in it, but i love the way they are growing the sound from the old atdi into something new. you can hear the progress as artists they have made. every one keeps comparing it to roc but i feel this album is on par with it. if you cant see it, listen to the album more. hear the order in the chaos under the order.
