I'll tell you what you want to know
I could have saved a broken heart
If I'd found out long ago
I'm just thinking about
Those lonely nights
When I waited for your call
All my friends were right (ooh, ooh)
I didn't know you at all
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
They say you got a broken heart
I heard it
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
Yes I did, boy, ooh, ooh, ooh
Now it seems they're telling me
You've changed your wicked ways
But should I give you a second chance
Baby, I'm too afraid
So you realize what hurt you made
And the love you threw away
How can I forgive or soon forget
It's never gonna be the same
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
They say you got a broken heart
I heard it
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
Yes I did, boy, ooh, ooh, ooh
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
They say you got a broken heart
I heard it
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
Yes I did, boy, ooh, ooh, ooh
Whoo!
I'm just thinking about
Those lonely nights (I'm just thinking about)
When I waited for your call
'Til I found out
All my friends were right
('Til I found out, ooh, ooh)
I didn't know you at all
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
They say you got a broken heart
I heard it
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
Yes I did, boy, ooh, ooh, ooh
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
They say you got a broken heart
I heard it
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
Yes I did, boy, ooh, ooh, ooh
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
They say you got a broken heart
I heard it
I heard a rumour
Ooh, ooh, I heard a rumour
Yes I did, boy, ooh, ooh, ooh
The lyrics to Bananarama's song "I Heard a Rumour" tell the story of a woman who finds out that her significant other has been unfaithful. She reflects on the lonely nights she spent waiting for his call and the advice that her friends had given her about him. She had been clueless about his unfaithfulness and would have been able to save herself from heartbreak had she known earlier. Rumors of his broken heart bring back memories of the pain he has caused her. Even though she now knows the truth, she is not sure if she can forgive him or forget his betrayal.
The lyrics can be interpreted as a warning against blindly trusting a partner and not heeding the advice of friends. The song's catchy beat and sing-along lyrics make it an anthem of the 80s dancefloor. The harmonious vocals of the band blend perfectly with the electronic beat and catchy melody. It is an upbeat song with a touch of sadness in the lyrics and is reflective of the band's style.
