Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
What Were We Thinking Of
Barbra Streisand Lyrics

Where does my heart belong, if it's not with you?
We held on to our pride when we left each other
But what good is pride tonight when we're all alone
Why did we give up on us so fast?
Isn't love supposed to last forever?
Looking for something better
Reaching for more than love
What were we thinking of?
Too late we both discovered
We're lost without each other
What were we thinking of?
Tonight I stay awake wanting just to call you
Knowing my heart would break if you were not home
So, I never call and you will never answer
You know the saddest part of all is I know you're there
Why do we run from the arms of love
When we really need each other more than ever
Oh, what were we thinking of?
Looking for something better
Reaching for more than love
What were we thinking of?
Too late we both discovered
We're lost without each other
What were we thinking of?
Oh, both of us thought we'd find true love with another
Why were we so blind it was right here all the time
What were we thinking of?
Looking for something better
Reaching for more than love
What were we thinking of?
Too late we both discovered
We're lost without each other, no
What were we thinking of?
What were we thinking of?
Looking for something better
What were we thinking of?
What were we thinking of?
Ooh what were we thinking of?
What were we thinking of?
Reaching for more than love
What were we thinking of?
The song 'What Were We Thinking Of' by Barbra Streisand is a poignant ballad about lost love and regret. The lyrics describe the aftermath of a failed relationship and the painful realization that both parties made a mistake by ending it. The first verse sets the scene for the song, with the singer questioning where they went wrong and where their heart truly belongs now that their love has ended. The second verse delves deeper into the regret and sadness felt by the singer, who wonders why they gave up on their love so quickly and why they didn't work harder to save it. The chorus repeats the title phrase, 'What Were We Thinking Of', emphasizing the sense of disbelief and regret at the lost love.
The third verse is particularly poignant, with the singer admitting to wanting to reach out to their former lover, but being too scared of rejection. The saddest part of it all, they say, is knowing that their lover is still there, but they cannot make the connection they so desperately crave. The final verse is a plea for understanding, as both parties realize that they were foolish to think that they could find true love with anyone else when the love they had was always right there in front of them.
