BarlowGirl's Philosophy
The band has gained a following with their "Anti-Conformity" message of "Don't be conformed, be Transformed" from Romans 12:1-2. Besides believing in abstinence and modesty, the band has also taken a stand on not dating, but their main message remains that people should look to God for love and security, and he will bring everything else into our lives. Very simply, trust God. They encourage people to trust the unseen. Just because you can't see God doesn't mean He isn't there!
Self Titled Debut Album
BarlowGirl instantly hit the spotlight in 2004 with their acclaimed self-titled debut album, coupled with the success of its first single, Never Alone. The CD has sold over 250,000 units (as of April 2005) and featured the singles Never Alone and Mirror which both garnered much airplay on Christian radio stations. These number one songs earned the trio four 2005 GMA (Gospel Music Association) awards (formerly the Dove Award) award nominations, including the prestigious Best New Artist award, Best Rock Song and Rock Album. The trio was the best selling new Christian artist of 2004. BarlowGirl received a 2006 GMA award nomination for Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year for Mirror.
Another Journal Entry
Their second album, Another Journal Entry, was released on September 27, 2005. The first single from the album, Let Go, had already begun receiving airplay on Christian radio stations. Did You know that You had left me crying there?
Now I'm holding all Your words
Close till You feel this pain too, yeah
You live on so unaware
While I thought somehow this hate would heal me
But this hate is never ending and it's only killing me
I find I can't get free
'Till I release this vengeance that I seek
Forgive You, the only thing
I wanna live, I'm ready to be free, to be free
Maybe you've been wounded too
Maybe all this is Your self protection
And all the hurts You thought were hidden
Are the ones now hurting me
So, who will make this patter end?
I find I can't get free
Till I release this vengeance that I seek
Forgive You, the only thing
I wanna live, I'm ready to
Break these chains
Won't see this through
'Cause setting You free
Will mean my freedom too, freedom too, oh
I find I can't get free
Till I release this vengeance that I seek
Forgive You, the only thing
I wanna live, I'm ready to be free, to be free
The lyrics to BarlowGirl's song "Sweet Revenge" deal with the topic of forgiveness and the danger of seeking revenge. The singer addresses someone who has hurt her, asking if they noticed the pain they caused and if they are aware of the hurt they inflicted. The singer then admits to holding onto the hurtful words and seeking revenge, hoping that it would somehow heal her. However, she realizes that the hate and desire for revenge is only causing her more pain and holding her captive. She identifies that forgiveness is the only way to break free from the hurt and move on, stating that she is ready to be free.
The second verse suggests that the person who hurt the singer may also be hurting and using self-protection to avoid their own pain. However, their actions are now inflicting pain on the singer. The singer then questions who can stop this pattern of hurt and retaliation.
The chorus repeats the same message of seeking forgiveness and being ready to let go of the desire for revenge in order to be free. The bridge introduces the idea that by forgiving the person who hurt her, the singer will also be setting herself free from the chains of bitterness and anger.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sweet Revenge" explore the theme of forgiveness and the harm caused by seeking revenge. The message encourages letting go of bitterness and resentment and choosing forgiveness as a path to freedom and healing.
