Admit Defeat
Bastille Lyrics

I know it's been a week
I know it's not been long
But I'm already past the point of no return
I've got you on a loop
I've got you in my head
A chemical reaction, a flashback to your bed

Waiting for your call
I can feel my body shaking
Calm before the storm
Let it take me, I embrace it

You stirred somethin' in me
I admit defeat
Won't be thinking 'bout
Anything at all tonight, but

You, oh, oh
Anything at all, but
You, oh, oh
Anything at all, but you

So tell me when you're out
And tell me where to go
Of course, you have my body but now you've got my soul
You drive me to distraction
Run me off the road
You crash into my mind, I'm ready to explode

Waiting for your call
I can feel my body shaking
Calm before the storm
Let it take me, I embrace it

You stirred somethin' in me
I admit defeat
Won't be thinking 'bout
Anything at all tonight, so
Wrap yourself 'round me
I admit defeat
Won't be thinking 'bout
Anything at all tonight, but

You, oh, oh
Anything at all, but
You, oh, oh
Anything at all, 'cause

You're the only voice in my head
I can hear you speaking
Louder than I'm thinking
Hang on every word that you said
Drive me to distraction
Drive me to distraction

You're the only voice in my head
I can hear you speaking
Louder than I'm thinking
Hang on every word that you said
Drive me to distraction
Drive me to distraction, you

Stirred somethin' in me
I admit defeat
Won't be thinking 'bout
Anything at all tonight, so
Wrap yourself 'round me
I admit defeat
Won't be thinking 'bout
Anything at all tonight, but

You, oh, oh
Anything at all, but
You, oh, oh
Anything at all, but you

Anything at all, but you
Anything at all, but you

Overall Meaning

In Bastille's song "Admit Defeat," the lyrics express the overwhelming impact someone has on the singer's life. The singer acknowledges that it has only been a short time since they have been involved with this person, but they have already reached a point of no return in their emotions. The repetitive thoughts of this person and memories of intimate moments create a chemical reaction in the singer's mind, triggering a longing for their presence.

The lyrics also depict the singer's vulnerability and surrender to this person's influence. They describe waiting anxiously for their call, feeling their body shake with anticipation. The reference to the calm before the storm suggests a heightened state of emotion. Instead of resisting or denying these feelings, the singer embraces them, allowing themselves to be consumed by this intense connection.

Furthermore, the lyrics emphasize the power this person holds over the singer. The phrase "you've got my soul" implies that this individual has captured the essence of who the singer is. They become distracted and lose focus on everything else, willing to surrender their thoughts and desires to this person. The chorus repeats the idea of admitting defeat in thinking about anything other than this person and highlights the singer's longing for them.

Overall, "Admit Defeat" delves into the overwhelming influence that someone can have on an individual's emotions and thoughts, leading to a state of surrender and obsession.

I feel like this song could be a sequel to “Send Them Off!” The opening is kinda similar with the brassy synth horns. In “Send Them Off!” he is fighting the feelings trying to “exorcise his mind,” and cast off the feelings. Yet, he acknowledges how things should be going. “I should be thinking about nothing else when I’m with you.”
In this song, the character is coming to terms with himself and his feelings. He admits defeat and stops trying to fight what’s happening. In this one, he sings “won’t be thinking bout anything at all tonight but you.” She had his body in “Send them off,” which is implied by the possession metaphor. Here he also sings, “of course you’ve got my body but now you’ve got my soul.”
Just a theory. You can agree or disagree I don’t really care. Just thought I’d share my thoughts 😁
