They didn't receive much mainstream attention for their first two albums, 2000's punk-pop Sussidiario Illustrato della Giovinezza and 2003's La Moda del Lento, though they were critically acclaimed.
Fabrizio left for perosnal and artistic reasons, after their newly produced and managed third album finally brought them more widespread popularity.
Now made up of leader Francesco Bianconi on vocals, guitar, and synths, Rachele Bastreghi on vocals and keys, Claudio Brasini on guitar, and Claudio Chiari on drums, the band released La Malavita on Warner Bros. Italy in 2005. Mixing the romantic sounds of British artists like the Smiths and Depeche Mode with Italian composers like Ennio Morricone and Angelo Badalamenti and American acts like Television and Scott Walker, as well as with modern sounds of electronica and indie rock, the record gained immediate attention in the group's home country, resulting in an extensive nationwide tour.

he's my teddy-boy
campa di guai
non piange mai
si chiede "che
sarà di noi?"
mi scrive sulla bocca
le parole che
non posso dire
quando piango in questo mondo stupido
mi fa morire con le mani
buone da trasmettere ah - ah
a queste natiche
di panna e di caffè
che male c'è?
mon petit Verlaine ah - ah...
The above lyrics are from Baustelle's song "Noi bambine non abbiamo scelta" which means "We girls have no choice". The song is essentially about the experience of young girls who are groomed by older men, who appear to offer excitement and romance but in reality, they take advantage of their naivety and prey on their vulnerability. The first verse describes a phone call from the older man, promising to take the young girl to the cinema and the idea of him being her "drug" that can’t hurt her because they have nothing else in their lives, no other real choices.
The second verse describes the attraction of the young girl towards the man. She likes him because he is a cool guy on a motorcycle, and she wants nothing more than to spend time with him, sharing moments with him in a cheap motel, even if the water in the tub is dirty. She believes that there is nothing wrong with being with him, and he frees her from her painful reality. The refrain "Noi bambine non abbiamo scelta" emphasizes the fact that these girls have no actual choice since they are so vulnerable, and they see nothing else in their lives.
The third verse talks about how great the man, "Teddy boy" is as he never cries, and he always wonders about his future. He writes on her lips, expressing the things she can't say and holding her, making her feel alive. The last sentence of the lyric refers to Verlaine a famous French poet who seduced young men, alluding to the idea that the older man is like a charming manipulator, seducing and taking advantage of young girls who are easily overwhelmed by their new experiences.
