Me Against the World
Beatsteaks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Beatsteaks' "Me Against the World" vividly express an unquenched cynicism towards the unforgiving nature of society. The lead singer laments how upon waking up every morning and going to bed, the same issues of social divisiveness, governmental corruption, homelessness, income inequality, a lack of respect for human life, and disrespect for nature seem to persist. The repetition of the line "brother against brother, it's a normal thing" emphasizes how even familial bonds are disintegrating due to societal factors. With each passing day, the singer feels that he is fighting a losing battle against the world's seemingly impervious dysfunction.
Moreover, the chorus where the singer repeats "This is me against the world" emphasizes that even though the singer is one person facing multiple issues, he's committed to fighting the world's injustices all by himself. He believes that the society around him has become devoid of positive virtues, and thus he feels a sense of betrayal by society. The lyrics voice an intense frustration at society's flaws and the inability to improve it.
