Belleville Rendez-Vous
Ben Charest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

J'voudrais finir ma vie à Katmandou (Katmandou)

Overall Meaning

The song "Belleville Rendez-Vous" by Ben Charest is about an individual who does not want to end up living a mundane life in different parts of the world like Tombouctou, Acapulco, Singapour or Honolulu. Instead, the individual wants to live a life of excitement and adventure, just like the Belleville triplets, who are known for their thrilling moves and unique personalities.

The singer wants to be "frippé" or wrinkly, "tordu" or twisted, "idiot" or crazy, and "givré" or chilled, just like the triplets. The song suggests that the individual wants to lead a life of joy and free will rather than being confined to societal norms. The chorus highlights the desire to be a part of the famous "Swinging Belleville rendez-vous" - an event where people come together to dance relentlessly and have a good time.

Overall, the song portrays the message that life should be lived to the fullest and filled with adventure, which is illustrated by the oddball characters in the song who are embraced for their unique qualities.

About 16 years ago, my third grade teacher played this song to our class. I had no idea what the lyrics were but the tune stuck in my head. For 16 years I couldn’t get this song out. The only word I knew in the song was rendezvous. I finally found it. Hearing it again after all this time is a blast from the past. I feel like I can finally get this out of my head.

If you can, do watch the film itself, it's very good. In fact, you can do that right now!

It's a wonderfully strange piece of cinema. And the song is addictive, yes. I like both French and English versions of it. I love how he sings words like "Acapuuuuuuulco" and "Honoluuuuuuuulu".

What a weird thing to make a 3rd grade class listen to.

It also sounds like you didn't pay attention in class.
