The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in Berlin in 1882 by 54 musicians under the name Frühere Bilsesche Kapelle (literally, "Former Bilse's Band"); the group broke away from their previous conductor Benjamin Bilse after he announced his intention of taking the band on a fourth-class train to Warsaw for a concert. The orchestra was renamed and reorganized under the financial management of Hermann Wolff in 1887. Their new conductor was Ludwig von Brenner; in 1887 Hans von Bülow, one of the most esteemed conductors in the world, took over the post. This helped to establish the orchestra's international reputation, and guests Hans Richter, Felix von Weingartner, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms and Edvard Grieg conducted the orchestra over the next few years.

The lyrics of Berliner Philharmoniker & Wiener Singverein’s song Dies Irae depict the inevitability of judgment day and the fear and trembling associated with it. The chorus sings of the day of wrath (dies irae) that shall dissolve the world into ashes, using the testimonies of David and the Sibyl to emphasize the gravity of the situation. As the bass solo enters, the imagery of the trumpet sounding across the regions of the graves summons all before the throne of judgment, creating a sense of ultimate reckoning. The tenor then sings of the stupefying fear that will come with the resurrection of the dead, and their subsequent responses to the judgment. The alto continues the dread-filled imagery, invoking the image of the Judge, for whom nothing will remain hidden or unpunished.
The solo soprano and quartet then ask what the poor and unworthy shall do when they face the omniscient Judge, wanting to know who will plead their case when the just themselves are not secure. The chorus then pleads for the merciful salvation of the tremendous King of Majesty who can save freely, even as the quartet reminds Jesus of the role they have played in causing His suffering and begs for Him to remember them on Judgment Day. The final plea comes from the quartet and chorus, begging for God’s mercy and forgiveness and asking for peaceful rest for the departed.
