Never Let You Go
Bertine Zetlitz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'tell him I'm leaving'
Nice little note
Knew he'd be grieving
And if he'd speak in code,
I'd let him know what's on my mind
Surely alone, I will be beaming
And you'll never let her know
That you never let her go
Suitcase all packed
Placed in the doorway
He never knew
You would go that way
He thought that you would
always be around to keep him safe
Surely alone, she'll be a great lay
(lay, lay, lay, lay, lay, lay, lay)
But she'll never let you go
Though she'll never let you know
That she never let you go
You will never let her go
And you'll never let her know
That you never let her go
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
She will never let you go
But, she'll never let you know
That she never let you go
You will never let her go
And you'll never let her know
That you never let her go
The song "Never Let You Go" by Bertine Zetlitz tells the story of a couple who have reached the end of their relationship. The lyrics are quite straightforward and seem to indicate that the female protagonist, Juliet, has decided to leave her partner but has left a note explaining her decision. The note is poignant in its simplicity and seems to have been written with care, as she knew that he would be grieving. However, the lyrics suggest that there is perhaps some ambiguity in the note as Juliet also says that if he spoke in code, she would let him know what was on her mind. Perhaps this alludes to the fact that their communication had broken down, and she felt that he was not listening to her.
The chorus of "Never Let You Go" is quite powerful as it is repeated several times throughout the song. The phrase "never let her go" is repeated three times and suggests that the male protagonist is still holding onto his partner in some way, even though she has left him. The song also suggests that the female protagonist will never let her partner go, even though she has chosen to leave him. These lines give the impression that both protagonists are still holding onto their relationship, even as it crumbles around them.
Overall, "Never Let You Go" is a powerful song about the end of a relationship, and it carries a message that perhaps it is sometimes harder to let go than it is to hold on. The lyrics seem to suggest that both protagonists are struggling to move on even though the relationship has ended.
