Get Your Shit Together

It's been sometime,
I try and read you
In your shifting eyes
Your hands are trembling
As I hold 'em in mine
How ya livin'
You were the talker
We grew up wonderin'
How we would get out
But you're still talkin' talkin'
You got places to go
You got people to know
You got plans
To get your shit together
Did you take it too far
Did you forget who you are
Did you stash your soul
Into the closet forever
So now you're hustling
For the five & dime
You cure the stranger
& his perverted mind
You are the poet of need
& lust how's the preachin'
You painted destinations
On the inside
& dreamed of revelations
Yearning to fly
But you're still walkin'
& still talkin'
Hold on geany
Watch what ya say
Save your preachin'
For a rainier day
Hold on geany
I'm talkin' to you
You're so amazing
In whatever you do
In the first verse, the singer greets an old friend whom she hasn't seen in a while. The friend's eyes are shifting, indicating that she might be hiding something. The friend's hands are trembling, which the singer is holding in hers, as if trying to offer some support. The singer asks her friend how she's living, implying that she might not be doing very well. The second verse explains that the friend used to be the talker, whereas the singer was the clown, but they both grew up with the same dream of making something of themselves. However, the friend is still talking and has places to go, people to know, and plans to get her shit together.
The chorus is a rough assessment of the friend's current status. The singer asks if she took it too far, forgot who she was, and stashed her soul into the closet forever. The friend is now hustling for the five & dime and is curing the stranger and his perverted mind. The lyrics suggest the friend has made compromises on her journey, but they don't indicate what those compromises are. The bridge of the song urges the friend to hold on and watch what she's saying. The singer asks her to save her preaching for a rainier day, indicating that she might not be the same person she used to be. The final line of the bridge pays her friend a compliment and calls her "amazing."

It's so refreshing to see a woman who's so unselfconscious, raw and enjoying herself while performing. She gives zero f***s and I love it.
NoraAlbo
I was thinking the exact same thing!!! Not one female performer would have her courage to be so free not give 2 fks in sweat. They'd have a crew of makeup and wardrobe putting them together in between every performance. This badass ,dripping with sweat, still is sexier than any of them!!!!! That's the difference between a narcissist and BETH HART. OHMYGOSH she takes you to another world!!!

When any Entertainer regardless of their profession can mix with the crowd & not be messed with there is an instant bond between fan and artist that will sell more music than any other action. And she is very personable off stage as well.
bangitsmom !
I LOVE that she goes into the crowd all the time. I've seen her live a couple times and she connects with the crowd so strongly.

I really wish she wouldn't do that. There are some really bad people out there.

So totally reminiscent of Janis. So glad she's gotten her shit together, gotten clean and didn't go the path that Janis did. Love her music~ so grateful she's still around and making music that's better than ever! Beth is the bomb!❤
