Big Head Todd and The Monsters β singer-guitarist Todd Park Mohr, bassist-singer Rob Squires, drummer-singer Brian Nevin and keyboardist-guitarist-singer Jeremy Lawton -- could have begun resting on their laurels back in 1993, when their Top 10 singles βBittersweet,β βBroken Hearted Savior,β βCircleβ and βItβs Alrightβ pushed the album Sister Sweetly to platinum certification. However, Mohr says, βIβve fought throughout our career not to be a one-trick pony, to be the kind of band that has depth and diversity in its catalogue. Iβm a fan of this band, and Iβm constantly looking forward to what comes next.β
The essence of Big Head Todd and The Monsters β a rootsy, emotionally direct variety of rock βnβ roll that lends itself particularly well to a live setting β has been winning fans since Mohr, Rob Squires and Brian Nevin started playing together in high school (Jeremy Lawton joined in 2004). Needless to say, the three never expected to be in the same band at this late date, but, as Mohr points out, βIt was a really fortunate combination of musical personalities, and weβre still partners in every sense of the word.β
The band spent seven years developing their chemistry and amassing a following, boosted significantly by the independent releases Another Mayberry (1989) and Midnight Radio (1990), before being βdiscoveredβ by the listening public at large with 1993βs Sister Sweetly. After a major-label stint (Sister Sweetly, 1994βs Stratagem, 1997βs Beautiful World), during which the trio increasingly found itself frustrated artistically, they reclaimed their independent status (2001βs Riviera, 2004βs Crimes of Passion). βIf it were not for our ability to do things for ourselves, we would have disappeared a long time ago,β Mohr allows.
Soul For Every Cowbooy
Big Head Todd and the Monsters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And a star to guide him home.
And an angel to bring him,
A song to sing when he's alone.
For the night is far from over
And the storm is coming on.
And the wind is blowing colder.
And he's very far from home.
His heart soon forgets.
That ever he was loved or wanted to be loved.
The song 'Soul For Every Cowboy' by Big Head Todd and the Monsters is a poignant portrayal of the cowboy way of life. The lyrics suggest that despite the tough exterior and the rugged individualism associated with cowboys, they too yearn for a sense of belonging and a connection with others. The line 'And a soul for every cowboy' implies that amidst the vast expanse of the Western landscape, every cowboy has a soul and deserves to be understood and appreciated. The mention of a star to guide him home and an angel to bring him a song suggest that even in moments of isolation and loneliness, there is hope and comfort to be found.
The second half of the song takes on a more melancholic tone, as the cowboy finds himself facing a difficult and treacherous journey. The metaphorical storm and the cold wind seem to represent the harshness of life and the struggles that every person must face at some point. The line 'His heart soon forgets. That ever he was loved or wanted to be loved.' speaks to the idea of emotional detachment that cowboys often resort to, as a means of survival. It suggests that even though they might have loved and been loved in the past, in the face of adversity, the memories of those feelings fade away.
