Although never achieving substantial commercial success, the band was widely respected and critically acclaimed.
The band is not currently active however the members all continue to live in the Sydney area. Drummer Nick Kennedy and bassist Eliot Fish are members of other Sydney bands. Greg Atkinson has gone on to form the Worker Bees with brother (and ex-Ups and Downs bandmate) Darren, and more recently, indie chamber pop band Theories of Everything.
As of January 2006, there is a rumour circulating that the band have parted ways. I See Things
Big Heavy Stuff Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This time
So fast, faster, speeding, we're way too slow
This time
Close, far, hot to medium to cold, this time
So smart, if that's your bleeding head, who's the dope
this time?
And I see things everywhere, this time
And I see things everywhere, this time
We both laugh when some comedian is out of jokes
This time
We won't starve if that's believing in you
If I'm believing in you, this time
And I see things everywhere, this time
And I see things everywhere, this time
And I see things everywhere, this time
And I see things everywhere, this time
This time, this time
The lyrics to Big Heavy Stuff's song "I See Things" appear to be somewhat ambiguous and open to interpretation, but they seem to be about a person who is particularly perceptive and observant, seeing things that others might miss. The opening lines "Born last and after me there is no one else, this time" suggest a sense of uniqueness and perhaps a feeling of being the last of a kind. The following lines "So fast, faster, speeding, we're way too slow, this time" could be interpreted as a commentary on the fast-paced, frantic nature of modern life, with the singer feeling as though they are moving too slowly to keep up.
The next section of the song appears to contrast different degrees of intensity or emotion - "Close, far, hot to medium to cold, this time/So smart, if that's your bleeding head, who's the dope this time?" These lines could be referring to different emotional states or levels of engagement with the world, and the question at the end could be a challenge to those who believe they are smarter or more perceptive than the singer.
The chorus, which repeats the line "And I see things everywhere, this time" emphasizes the singer's heightened sense of perception and their sense that the world is rich with meaning and significance. The final verse seems to be about a close relationship between two people who have a deep understanding and appreciation for each other, laughing together and believing in each other's abilities.
Overall, "I See Things" is a poetic and evocative song that captures a sense of heightened awareness and sensitivity to the world around us.
