Paul
Big Thief Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh the last time I saw Paul
I was horrible and almost let him in
But I stopped and caught the wall
And my mouth got dry so all I did was take him for a spin

Yeah, we hopped inside my car
And I drove in circles 'round the freight train yard
And he turned the headlights off
Then he pulled the bottle out
And then he showed me what is love

I'll be your morning bright goodnight shadow machine
I'll be your record player, baby, if you know what I mean
I'll be your real tough cookie with the whiskey breath
I'll be a killer and a thriller and the cause of our death

In the blossom of the months
I was sure that I'd get driven off with thought
So I swallowed all of it
As I realized there was no one who could kiss away my shit

I'll be your morning bright goodnight shadow machine
I'll be your record player, baby, if you know what I mean
I'll be your real tough cookie with the whiskey breath
I'll be a killer and a thriller and the cause of our death

Oh Paul, I know you said that you'd take me any way I came or went
But I'll push you from my brain
See, you're gentle, baby
I couldn't stay, I'd only bring you pain

I was your starry-eyed lover and the one that you saw
I was your hurricane rider and the woman you'd call

We were just two moonshiners on the cusp of a breath
And I've been burning for you baby since the minute I left

Overall Meaning

The Big Thief's song "Paul" is a poignant reflection on a past relationship with someone named Paul. The song opens with a vivid memory where the singer almost let Paul back in but stopped herself, and instead, they hopped into her car and drove around the freight train yard. The song implies both the excitement and the toxicity of the relationship as the singer states that Paul showed her what love is but also acknowledges that she was burning for him since she left.

The following verses paint an intricate picture of the singer's inner struggle between her love for Paul and the realization that the relationship is not what she needs. The singer promises to be Paul's good morning, his goodnight, and everything in between. The lyrics also reveal that Paul is a person who is willing to take her as she is with all her imperfection. The refrain reinforces the emotions of wanting to be everything for Paul, but the song is a bitter-sweet reflection on the inability of them being together.

In the end, the singer cannot stay and will only bring pain to Paul. Despite this, the lyrics reveal that the singer still carries strong feelings for Paul, comparing themselves to two moonshiners just on the "cusp of a breath." "Paul" is quintessentially a story about love and relationships where the author shares a beautiful moment in the past, but with a sad ending, leaving the listener with powerful reflections.

“as i realized there was no one who could kiss away all my shit” is just so painfully beautiful

@marto_sauce

I still don't know what that means lol

@pricklypear1704

@@marto_sauce i think it means that no one can love you enough to make your problems go away. That's so powerful because love is such a great thing, but it doesn't take away all the things wrong with us. It makes us happy, but it can't fix us.

@mads9517

@@marto_sauce for me it reminds me of the idea “you need to love yourself before loving someone else”. just that no matter how strongly someone can care for you they can never “fix” whatever problems u have within yourself
