A Few Good Men
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What this dying world could use is a willing Man of God
Who dares to go against the grain and works without applause;
A man who'll raise the shield of Faith, protecting what is pure;
Whose love is tough and gentle; a man whose word is sure.

God doesn't need an Orator who knows what just to say;
He doesn't need authorities to reason Him away;
He doesn't need an army to guarantee a win;
He just needs a Few Good Men.

Men full of Compassion, who Laugh and Love and Cry-
Men who'll face Eternity and aren't afraid to die-
Men who'll fight for Freedom and Honor once again-
He just needs a Few Good Men.

He calls the broken derelict whose life has been renewed;
He calls the one who has the strength to stand up for the Truth.
Enlistment lines are open and He wants you to come in-
He just needs a Few Good Men.

Men full of Compassion, who Laugh and Love and Cry-
Men who'll face Eternity and aren't afraid to die-
Men who'll fight for Freedom and Honor once again-
He just needs a Few Good Men.

Men full of Compassion, who Laugh and Love and Cry-
Men who'll face Eternity and aren't afraid to die-

Men who'll fight for Freedom and Honor once again-
He just needs a Few Good Men.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bill & Gloria Gaither's song A Few Good Men speaks of the kind of men that this dying world needs - men who are willing to step up and embody the qualities of a true Man of God. The song encourages men to go against the flow of society and to work without seeking applause or recognition. The song suggests that true Men of God should protect what is pure, have a love that is tough yet gentle, and have words that are sure.

The song also suggests that God doesn't need men who are eloquent speakers or authorities to prove his power or win victories for him. Instead, he needs men who are full of compassion, who laugh and love, men who aren't afraid to cry and face eternity, and men who will fight for freedom and honor. God wants men whose lives have been renewed and who are willing to stand up for the truth.

Overall, the song suggests that God needs a few good men who will be unapologetic about their faith, live a life of love, courage, and compassion, and whose actions will speak louder than any words they might speak.

Once in a while, there is a song that will put tears in your eyes because it made you realize that God is just good in your life.

Son was in the Ole Guard. Lots of funerals. I cry each time the drum rolls.

Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, the concert was planned long before the events of September 11th but became far more poignant after. The concert was performed in 2002, less than a year following the WTC attacks, so there were still plenty of raw emotions surrounding this song. The artists, in order of participation, are Woody Wright, Terry Blackwood, Sherman Andrus, Reggie Smith, Wesley Pritchard and Guy Penrod, backed by the Homecoming Choir. When the firefighters came out, my spine tingled and my heart was in my throat. You could see the eyes of a couple of those heroes tearing up from the support. Simply an amazing, amazing moment! No other superlatives will do.
