A House Of Gold
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People steal they cheat and lie
For wealth and what it will buy
But don't they know on judgment day
That gold and silver will melt away

I'd rather be in a dark grave
And to know that my poor soul was saved
Than to live in this world in a house of gold
And deny my God and doom my soul

What good is gold and silver too
If your hearts not pure and true

Sinner hear me when I say
Fall down on your knees and pray

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "A House of Gold" by Bill & Gloria Gaither convey the message that material possessions, such as gold and silver, will be of no use on judgment day. The song compares the temporary nature of wealth with the eternal value of salvation. The opening lines acknowledge that people often resort to stealing, cheating, and lying to accumulate wealth, but they fail to recognize that such riches will eventually melt away.

The singer then expresses a preference for a poor and obscure life with a saved soul over living in luxury, denying God, and dooming one's soul to eternal damnation. The song concludes with a call to sinners to repent and seek salvation while still on earth, as they might not have the chance to do so in the afterlife. The lyrics of "A House of Gold" emphasize that material possessions should not be the ultimate goal, and that spiritual renewal and salvation is infinitely more valuable.

While I enjoy everyone in this group. Mark holds my heart. His humor and love for everyone is the only thing that is even better than his voice. And though he never adds Mormons to his jokes, which I am…. And while I’m totally old school the jokes would never bother me. Lol I so enjoy his way of putting Gods word out. God so blessed him with multiple gifts. And I’m so thankful he shares them.
From an old Texas girl to an old Texas man… thank you for sharing your gifts. Only down side…. I directed church music for 30 years. I would have lived to just once had him in my choir.
