Mansion Over The Hilltop
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Mansion Over The Hilltop

I′m satisfied with just a cottage below,
A little silver and a little gold;
But in that city where the ransomed will shine,
I want a gold one that's silver-lined.

I′ve got a mansion just over the hilltop,
In that bright land where we'll never grow old;
And someday yonder we will never more wander,
But walk the streets that are purest gold.

Tho' often tempted, tormented and tested
And, like the prophet, my pillow a stone,
And tho′ I find here no permanent dwelling,
I know He′ll give me a mansion my own.

I've got a mansion just over the hilltop,
In that bright land where we′ll never grow old;
And someday yonder we will never more wander,
But walk the streets that are purest gold.

Don't think me poor or deserted or lonely,
I′m not discouraged, I'm heaven bound;
I′m just a pilgrim in search of a city,
I want a mansion, a harp and a crown.

I've got a mansion just over the hilltop,
In that bright land where we'll never grow old;

And someday yonder we will never more wander,
But walk the streets that are purest gold.

Overall Meaning

The song 'Mansion Over The Hilltop' by Bill and Gloria Gaither is a song about a Christian's hope and longing for heaven, where they will reside with God. The singer explains that they are content with a simple life, represented by a cottage, and a little money, but they aspire to have a mansion in heaven, which is made of gold and silver. The singer does not have a permanent dwelling on earth, and they are often tested and tempted, just like the prophet whose pillow was a stone. However, the singer firmly believes that God will give them a mansion of their own in heaven, where they will walk on streets made of pure gold. The desire for a mansion is reinforced by the refrain, 'I've got a mansion just over the hilltop'.

The song is about an unwavering faith in God's promise of eternal life, where suffering and sorrow will come to an end. The singer is confident of their salvation and is not discouraged by the challenges of life. The verse 'Don't think me poor or deserted or lonely, I'm not discouraged, I'm heaven bound; I'm just a pilgrim in search of a city, I want a mansion, a harp and a crown' is about how people may see the singer's simple life and assume that they are unhappy, but the singer knows that their hope is in heaven and they are on a journey to get there. The song is an uplifting message to those who believe, to remain steadfast in their faith and to look forward to a wonderful future in heaven.

Some of my earliest memories are of my mother singing this in the kitchen as she cooked or did dishes. Then when I was saved as a young GI in the 80’s Mylon became a strong favorite, so... I love this so, so much.

You can see the praises in Mrs. LeFevre soul that Mylon was delivered from addiction and came back to The Lord in a mighty way. I am sure she is looking down from heaven saying “look at what my son is doing now’! Praise The Lord! Oh how our mighty God loves us!
