What Child Is This?
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is this thing called love?
This funny thing called love
Just who can solve its mystery?
And why should it make a fool of me?

I saw you there, one wonderful day
But you took my heart and you threw my heart away
That's why I ask the Lord up in heaven above
Just what is this thing called love?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bill & Gloria Gaither's song "What Child Is This?" are unrelated to the lyrics you have provided. "What Child Is This?" is a Christmas carol based on a poem written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865. The lyrics tell the story of the birth of Jesus and reflect on the awe and wonder surrounding His arrival.

The song begins by posing the question, "What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?" It describes the scene of Jesus' birth and the angels announcing His arrival to the shepherds. The lyrics then shift to contemplation, asking, "Why lies He in such mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding?" This acknowledges the humble circumstances in which Jesus was born, despite His significance as the Son of God.

The chorus of the song reveals the identity of the child, proclaiming, "This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing." It acknowledges the divinity of Jesus and the reverence with which He is celebrated.

Overall, "What Child Is This?" is a hymn that invites listeners to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and the profound impact of the birth of Jesus Christ.

I said it somewhere before but gee Sheri sounds like Brenda Lee on some notes. I love her version of this song. Saw her and Jeff in Sydney in 2003 with the Gaither Vocal Band. They were so good.

What child is this who laid to rest on Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping.
This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud.
The babe, the son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and donkeys are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spears shall pierce him through,
The cross he bore for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king, to own him.
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The babe, the Son of Mary.
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
