Mohair Sam
Bill Haley & His Comets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well - who is the hippie that's happening all over our town?
Tearing up chicks with the message that he lays down
Who is the coolest guy, what is, what am?
That's fast-talking slow-walking good-looking Mohair Sam.

Chicks are making reservations for his loving so fine (so fine)
Screaming and shouting he's got 'em all waiting in line
Who is the coolest guy, what is, what am?
That's fast-talking slow-walking good-looking Mohair Sam.

Who is the hippie that's happening all over our town?
Tearing' up chicks with the message that he lays down

Who is the coolest guy, what is, what am?
That's fast-talking slow-walking good-looking Mohair Sam.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bill Haley & His Comets' "Mohair Sam" describe a charismatic and stylish man who is causing a stir in the town with his smooth and persuasive ways. This man, Mohair Sam, is attracting the attention of women who are eager to be with him and are making reservations for his affection. The lyrics suggest that he is the coolest guy around, walking slowly and talking fast, and he knows how to charm the ladies. He is a hippie in the sense that he is unconventional and stands out from the crowd, but he is not associated with the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

The song is an upbeat rock and roll number with a driving rhythm and catchy lyrics that celebrate the magnetism and appeal of Mohair Sam. The repetitive chorus reinforces the idea that he is the ultimate ladies' man and the envy of all the men in town. The song captures the energy and excitement of the early rock and roll era and reflects the influence of African American music on popular music at the time. "Mohair Sam" is a fun and lively tune that celebrates the carefree spirit of youth and the thrill of infatuation.

Bit more info: the song was released on the Sonet album "R-O-C-K" (1976) which as noted later was released on Sun in 1979. Although this was the first time Haley himself recorded it, the group did a version in 1966 for Orfeon Records in Mexico with Johnny Kay as the lead singer.

This was recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1976. the confusion about it being from 1979 may be due to the fact that it was not released in the U.S. until 1979, and on Sun Records on top of that!
