Blonde Crazy- When Your Lover Has Gone
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What good is the scheming, the planning and dreaming
That comes with each new love affair
The dreams that we cherish, so often might perish
And leaves you with castles in air

When you're alone, who cares for starlit skies
When you're alone, the magic moonlight dies
At break of dawn, there is no sunrise
When your lover has gone

What lonely hours, the evening shadows bring
What lonely hours, with memories lingering

Like faded flowers, life can't mean anything
When your lover has gone

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's song "Studio Talk: When Your Lover Has Gone," the lyrics express the feelings of loss and emptiness that come with the end of a love affair. The opening lines, "What good is the scheming, the planning and dreaming/ That comes with each new love affair," suggest that despite the excitement and anticipation that often accompany new relationships, they can ultimately end in disappointment. The dreams and hopes that we invest in these relationships can quickly fade away, leaving us with nothing but illusions.

The chorus continues this theme, highlighting the sense of emptiness and despair when one is left alone without their lover. The imagery of starlit skies and magic moonlight dying emphasizes the loss of enchantment and romance. The absence of a sunrise at dawn symbolizes the absence of hope or renewal when one's lover is no longer present.

The second verse further explores the loneliness and longing that follows the departure of a lover. The evening shadows and memories that linger only serve to intensify the loneliness. The comparison to faded flowers suggests that life loses its vibrancy and meaning when love is lost.

Overall, "Studio Talk: When Your Lover Has Gone" portrays the emotional impact of a failed love affair, showing the emptiness and despair that follow the departure of a lover.

Billie Holiday recorded this 8-23-55, so James Dean got to enjoy it for a little over a month. Wonderful tune, shows he had excellent taste.

Every time I think of James Dean, I think of Billie Holiday music, and New York City. Its just the perfect combination.

Only just found out minutes ago this was his favorite song of Holiday's, been a fan of both for more than a decade and I'm still only 26.

Incredible song. It brings a tear to my eye. Rest In Peace Jimmy.

@kpopkrazee

its nice to think that this is a song James Dean had listened to and also enjoyed the mellow tunes of, gives u a small but still an insight of how he might have been as a person, instead of just how he was painted by the Hollywood marketing masterminds.
