Fallin' In Love Again
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Always blue all in a mist
It's plain as can be
You're so mean to me
But everything happens for the best
You always play around
You're running my heart so deep in the ground
That O.K. everything happens for the best
I loved you so madly
Knew you would be true
Now this thing has happened dear
It's over all over because we're through
So sorry dear it end this way
Since the world begin
The old folks say
Everything happens for the best

I loved you so madly
Knew you would be true
Now this thing has happened dear
It's over all over because we're through
So sorry dear it end this way
Since the world begin
The old folks say
Everything happens for the best
Failing in love again
Never wanted to
What am I to do?
Can't help it

Love's always been my game
Play it as I may
I was born that way
Can't help it

Men flock around me
Like moths around a flame
And if their wings burn
I know I'm not to blame

I'm falling
Can't help it

Overall Meaning

The song “Falling in Love Again” by Billie Holiday and Her Orchestra is a creation about the turmoil of love, and it's not always a bed of roses. The song starts off by painting a picture of melancholy, as the persona describes herself as "Always blue all in a mist" or perpetually sad. She realizes that "You're so mean to me/But everything happens for the best." which showcases the idea that she recognizes that things may not necessarily work out the way she wants them too, but that it’s all for the best. She goes on to describe how her lover plays around and leaves her heartbroken, but once again, it’s alright because everything happens for the best. The singer then takes a trip down memory road, reminiscing about how she loved her man so madly and adamantly believed that he was true to her. Unfortunately, the “thing” happened, and it's all over now because they're through. She concludes by apologizing for it to end this way, but she knows in her heart that everything happens for the best.

The second verse depicts the persona's inability to escape love. No matter how hard she tries, she keeps falling in love again. She describes how men flock around her like moths attracted to a flame when she plays her role in the game of love. However, if things don't work out, she's not to blame. The chorus comes in and repeats "Can't help it" several times to drive home the point of how falling in love again can be impossible to control.

A Dog Named Handsome

This is the best variation of this excellent but very short song that I've heard. Thanks for posting. Lady Day, indeed.
