Moonlight In Vermont
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pennies in a stream
Falling leaves a sycamore
Moonlight in Vermont

Gentle finger waves
Ski trails down a mountain side
Snow light in Vermont
Telegraph cables, how they sing down the highway
As they travel each bend in the road
And when people meet, in this romantic setting
They're so hypnotized be the lovely

Evening summer breeze

Sweet warblings of the meadowlark
Moonlight in Vermont

Overall Meaning

The first line of the song, "Pennies in a stream", is an image that could be interpreted in different ways. One interpretation is that it refers to the passing of time, as the stream flows and the pennies follow. It could also be seen as a representation of the value placed on small things, as the pennies may seem insignificant on their own, but together they hold some worth. The following line, "Falling leaves a sycamore", suggest that we are witnessing the beauty of nature in autumn. The mention of leaves falling from a sycamore tree sets the place of the song in Vermont, and the changing color of the leaves and their falling represent the passage of time.

i always loved this version. holiday seems to have a real feel for a lyric that is not just a love song and the beautiful guitar work by kessel and the sax by webster always gave it a modern feel for the time it was recorded.
