Billy The Kid
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From a town known as Wheeling West Virginia
Rode a boy with a six-gun in his hand
And his daring life of crime
Made him a legend in his time
East and West of the Rio Grande

Well he started with a bank in Colorado
In the pocket of his vest, a Colt he hid
And his age and his size took the teller by surprise
And word spread of Billy the Kid

Well he never traveled heavy
Yes, he always rode alone
And he soon put other older guns to shame
And he never had a sweetheart
And he never had a home
But the cowboy and the rancher knew his name

Well he robbed his way from Utah to Oklahoma
And the law just could not seem to track him down
And it served his legend well
For the folks they'd love to tell 'bout when Billy the Kid came to town

Well one cold day a posse captured Billy
And the judge said "String 'I'm up for what he did!"
And the cowboys and their kin like the sea, came pourin' in to watch the hangin' of Billy the Kid

Well he never traveled heavy
Yes, he always rode alone
And he soon put other older guns to shame
And he never had a sweetheart
But he finally found a home
Underneath the boot hill grave that bears his name

From a town known as Oyster Bay, Long Island
Rode a boy with a six-pack in his hand
And his daring life of crime

Made him a legend in his time
East and West of the Rio Grande

I can't believe one man is so talented. He has an awesome voice, he's extremely good at playing piano, he's a great song writer, a great lyricist, and he can compose. I get chills when the violins play over the piano and the horns. It's just wonderfully written.

@stuartlimbrick4187

I believe he was porducing and writing for Broadway musicals too! I heard he was playing in Perth WA once at a hotel piano, and had to stop because a lady upstairs complained about the noise! Some people are just plain ignorant!! (lol)

Billy Joel has a half-brother, Alexander Joel, born to his father in Europe, who became a classical conductor there. Alexander Joel was the chief musical director of the Staatstheater Braunschweig from 2001 to 2014

And I was lucky enough to see him twice - Wembley was awesome but Old Trafford was simply magical!

@larryclacct

I like how the instruments make this song sound like a movie score

@alistairkentucky-david9344

That's what he was going for! It really would have been a good film score.
