Pressure
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You have to learn to pace yourself
Pressure
You're just like everybody else
Pressure
You've only had to run so far
So good
But you will come to a place
Where the only thing you feel
Are loaded guns in your face
And you'll have to deal with
Pressure

You used to call me paranoid
Pressure
But even you can not avoid
Pressure
You turned the tap dance into your crusade
Now here you are with your faith
And your Peter Pan advice
You have no scars on your face
And you cannot handle pressure

All grown up and no place to go
Psych 1, Psych 2
What do you know?
All your life is Channel 13
Sesame Street
What does it mean?

I'll tell you what it means
Pressure
Pressure

Don't ask for help
You're all alone
Pressure
You'll have to answer
To your own
Pressure
I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale
But here you are in the ninth
Two men out and three men on
Nowhere to look but inside
Where we all respond to
Pressure
Pressure

All your life is Time magazine
I read it too
What does it mean?
Pressure
I'm sure you'll have some cosmic rationale
But here you are with your faith
And your Peter Pan advice
You have no scars on your face
And you cannot handle pressure

Pressure, pressure

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song "Pressure," the lyrics revolve around the concept of pressure, how it can build and affect one's life. He starts by warning that people need to learn to pace themselves, as the constant burden placed upon them can lead to a breaking point. The chorus reinforces this message, emphasizing that while you may try to resist or ignore it, pressure is a universal experience that everyone must deal with. The second verse seems directed towards someone, perhaps a friend or acquaintance, who used to dismiss concerns of pressure as paranoia but now faces it themselves. They've taken on a seemingly impossible task and are unable to handle the resulting mental strain. In the bridge, Joel turns his attention to the larger societal pressures that can impact a person's life. He mentions cultural icons like Sesame Street and Time magazine before ultimately concluding that despite the reasons we may give, we all must ultimately answer to our own internal pressures.

One interesting fact about "Pressure" is that it was released as the lead single from Joel's 1982 album, "The Nylon Curtain," which was a departure from his previous work in both style and themes. The song has since become one of his most popular and enduring hits. Another interesting tidbit is that the song features a distinctive bassline played by Doug Stegmeyer, adding to the song's sense of urgency and tension. The chorus of "pressure" vocals that repeat throughout the song were contributed by Joel's ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth Weber. Additionally, the song has been covered by a range of artists, including Gloria Gaynor, Devin Townsend, and Toto, to name a few.

The chord progression for "Pressure" is as follows:

Verse: Am, D, Am, D, Am, Dm, Am, F
Chorus: Dm, G, C, F

Fantastic live version! Billy also looks great here

I remember seeing Billy at the River of Dreams tour in December 1994. Long time ago. He still sounds great today. Not bad for 64.

@thefreesoftwarefoundationc4410

+savedbyjesusblood I first saw him when I was 11 in 1998. First concert I ever saw at the Hartford Civic Center in CT here. I remember I was standing up on my chair (we had floor seats) the entire time in amazement and this rush of energy flowing through me as I took in the live music and just thought to myself "how can anyone be this awesome?" It relaly inspired me. Tommy Byrnes has remained one of my favorite guitarists, and I play and sing billys songs on piano since 16 (ten years ago) but my voice is going from smoking. Anyway he really inspired me and I have to thank him and the awesome band he had at the time. T-Bone Wolk on bass here, is now deceased sadly from a heart attack a few years ago. But Tommy is still at it on guitar, Crystal, Mark (I prefer his original sax player), ... Libertys gone since what like 2004 or something? All because he wanted fair pay for doing the shows. In an arena show Billy does the first like 7 rows of seats in the front are what the band gets paid per show. That isnt fair, and Billy has to know just cause his band is named after him, his shows would suck with solo piano. Imagine the turnout and imagine a show with just piano and Billy. He doesnt play like Elton so it just wouldnt work.

+The Free Software Foundation Computing Videos Billy Joel plays piano as well as Elton John. I am a fan of both and have listened to Billy and Elton forever! There are several videos of Billy just playing the piano and he's as riveting as he is with the band.
