The Longest Time
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
Oh, oh, oh
For the longest
If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
What else could I do
I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me
I haven't been there for the longest time

Oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
Oh, oh, oh
For the longest
I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
Is how I need you
And how you needed me too
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
But you feel so right
And I could be wrong
Maybe I've been hoping too hard
But I've gone this far
And it's more than I hoped for

Who knows how much further we'll go on
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone
I'll take my chances
I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time

I had second thoughts at the start
I said to myself
Hold on to your heart
Now I know the woman that you are
You're wonderful so far
And it's more than I hoped for

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
I want you so bad

I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time

Overall Meaning

Billy Joel’s song Longest Time is a song about love that has lasted so long that the singer finds it difficult to explain. The song expresses how the singer has found happiness and inspiration from the love of his life. The song starts with a statement of eternal love, and that the singer would still have music to write if he ever lost his love. This is to say, he is so inspired by the love they share that the essence can never leave him.

In the subsequent verses, the singer expresses his happiness for the love he has found. He remembers when he thought his innocence was gone, but he was wrong because happiness goes on, and that’s where he found his soulmate. He affirms that the woman in his life is the greatest miracle of all, and both she and the singer need each other. For the singer, this is something that hadn't happened "for the longest time."

The pre-chorus changes slightly for the second verse, where the singer expresses his doubts about the future of their love. However, the singer is ready to take the chance and expresses how he is grateful for what he has, and the woman he has become. He repeats that he is a fool for everything else, except loving his partner.

In conclusion, the song Longest Time is written from the perspective of someone who has found happiness and inspiration from a long-lasting love, and how the future is uncertain but how he is willing to take the chance because he wants to hold his love for the longest time.

It shows the versatility of Billy Joel. Known forever as the Piano Man yet will blow you away going acapella.

Rahul And His Planet

he could make all kinds of music. very few, if any artist has had hits acapella style like the longest time. with a paino like paino man or  synthpop style like we didn't start the fire. the man has had #1 hits in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. billy joel was the complete package.

Slikrik1212

4:00 Drummer singing along and he isn't even mic'd up.  Gotta love it.  Music like this is just so much fun to sing.  The harmonies here are so amazing:)

Will Williams

And the drummer's baby is now 33 years old. God I miss the 80s!

Bob Meadows

He does it all.  Great entertainer, vocalist, writer, and Piano Man all in one.

Joe G

He has the best interaction with the audience out of any other group or artists and that speaks volume about his character.

That wonderful song is one of the most cheerful I've ever heard, that performance was incredible, and Billy Joel was just pure awesomeness at that time.

Sheer pop genius. He went from singer/songwriter music to Tin Pan Alley/Broadway, classical, jazz, new wave rock to 50s doo wop. I don't care what the stinky critics say, Billy Joel is one of the masters of modern music.

Duneenzo

For those who've only just found this song, the original recording used only Joel's voice - no backing singers, no instruments. Every sound you hear on the track is Joel's voice, but of course that's impossible to reproduce on stage, so backing singers were used in the shows.

Josh Ringler

Frank Zappa said that other than conducting an orchestra, singing barbershop was the most gratifying thing he had ever done. I can see the immediate pride four or five guys get from being so in sync. Just a btw, me reenacting the Uptown Girl video for my gramma is one of my most prized moments with her.
