Tomorrow Is Today
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been livin' for the moment
But I just can't have my way
And I'm afraid to go to sleep
Cause tomorrow is today

People tell me life is sweeter
But I don't hear what they say
Nothing comes to change my life
So tomorrow is today

I don't care to know the hour
Cause it's passing anyway
I don't have to see tomorrow
Cause I saw it yesterday

So I listen for an answer
But the feeling seems to stay
And what's the use of always dreaming
If tomorrow is today

Still I'm waiting for the morning
But it feels so far away
And you don't need the love I'm giving
So tomorrow is today

Oh, my. Goin' to the river
Gonna take a ride and the Lord will deliver me
Made my bed, now I'm gonna lie in it
If you don't come, I'm sure gonna die in it
Too late. Too much given
I've seen a lot of life and I'm damn sick of livin' it
I keep hopin' that you will pass my way

And some day if your dreams are leavin' you
I'll still believe in you

I don't care to know the hour
Cause it's passing anyway
I don't have to see tomorrow
Cause I saw it yesterday

Though I'm living and I'm singing
And although my hands still play

Soon enough it will all be over
Cause tomorrow is today

Overall Meaning

The song 'Tomorrow is Today' by Billy Joel, from his album Cold Spring Harbor, is a moving statement on depression, suicidal thoughts, and loss. The lyrics describe a sense of despair and hopelessness that can engulf a person's life, making them unable to find meaning or purpose in their existence. The opening lines express the frustration of longing for something that seems impossible to attain. The singer is living in the moment and struggling to get their way, and they are afraid to fall asleep because they don't want to face another day of disappointment.

As the song continues, Billy Joel paints a picture of a life devoid of meaning. The singer can't find solace in the advice of others and is unable to see any positive changes in their life. They are stuck in a cycle of hopelessness, unable to break free from the despair that has taken hold. The lines "Nothing comes to change my life, So tomorrow is today" perfectly sum up the feeling of being trapped in a depressive state. Despite constantly waiting for something to change, it seems as though nothing will.

In the final verse, the singer seems resigned to their fate, singing "Soon enough it will all be over, Cause tomorrow is today." This line expresses the feeling of being tired and worn down by life, of feeling like nothing is worth the struggle. The song ends on a melancholy note, with the singer waiting for the morning, unsure if it will ever come. It's a powerful statement on the nature of depression, and a testament to the strength it takes to struggle against it.

People tell me life is sweeter But I don't hear what they say Nothing comes to change my life So tomorrow is today
People keep telling me that life is great, but I don't comprehend it. Everything is still the same every day, no changes. So each tomorrow is indistinguishable from today.

I don't care to know the hour Cause it's passing anyway I don't have to see tomorrow Cause I saw it yesterday
I don't care what the time is because it goes by so fast, and nothing changes day-to-day. There's no point in anticipating tomorrow's arrival, as it's just going to be déjà vu.

So I listen for an answer But the feeling seems to stay And what's the use of always dreaming If tomorrow is today
I am searching for answers, but I can't seem to find any. The unchanging feeling persists, and what's the point in dreaming if nothing will ever change?

Still I'm waiting for the morning But it feels so far away And you don't need the love I'm giving So tomorrow is today

I'm going to the river, and I trust that God will show me the way. I've done all that I can at this point and will accept the outcomes that come my way. If you don't come see me, I'm afraid I'll never make it. I've lived so much life and seen so much, and I'm tired of it all. Still, I hope to see you soon.

And some day if your dreams are leavin' you I'll still believe in you
And even if your dreams are falling apart or seem impossible, I will always believe in you and support you.

Though I'm living and I'm singing And although my hands still play Soon enough it will all be over Cause tomorrow is today
I'm celebrating life, singing songs, and my hands can still play instruments. Despite enjoying life, it will all come to an end soon, and every tomorrow will be the same as today.

One of the sweetest and saddest songs ever composed, a perfect reflection of his remarkable talent as a songwriter. musician and deep-thinking mind.

It is my favorite Billy Joel album hands down. I don't understand why its so underrated and mediocre rated.

@Ben Lackenby 8 years later commenting haha. Another bonus if you like the young Billy Joel voice: I recently fell in love with a few of the tunes/demos on the “My Lives” album. Worth a listen!

Definitely up there with the stranger turnstiles and 52nd street

I have the vinyl album with musician accompaniment.. it’s so much better than the re issued cd version which feels really ‘flat’

@tristan flynn I prefer the original versions of those Songs in the Attic songs but they had the first versions of “She’s Got a Way” and “Say Goodbye to Hollywood” I’d heard, before I bought Turnstiles and Cold Spring Harbor and found the (in my opinion) better versions.

tristan flynn

@thezombiecreeper I gotta say, Songs in The Attic was my favourite album of his earlier works. Best versions of them, hands down.

Cold Spring Harbor is one of my favorites albums because instead of the velocity errors, you can enjoy a pretty personal work of a so young genius. Thank God to give us Billy Joel. And now, I could inherit this music to my littlest daughter (4 years) :)
