Be Careful It s My Heart
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweetheart of mine, I've sent you a valentine
Sweetheart of mine, it's more than a valentine
Be careful, it's my heart
It's not my watch you're holding, it's my heart
It's not the note I sent you that you quickly burned
It's not the book I lent you that you never returned
Remember it's my heart
The heart with which so willingly I part
It's yours to take to keep or break

But please, before you start
Be careful, it's my heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's song Be Careful It's My Heart convey a deep sense of vulnerability and anxiety. The singer addresses his beloved, acknowledging the Valentine he has sent, but emphasizing that it is more than a simple gesture of affection. The crucial message lies in the title of the song: “Be careful, it's my heart”.

The singer is not just handing over a symbol of his love, but he is entrusting his heart entirely to someone else. He urges his beloved to take heed of the importance of his heart, which he puts on a pedestal as the most valuable possession he has. The aftermath of a failed relationship has left him jaded, and now he is approaching the idea of love with a sense of fear and apprehension, as he knows that the risks are high. At the same time, the song is also a sincere expression of the purest form of love, which demands nothing in return and is willing to put the other person's happiness above its own.

Bing thought when Irving Berlin wrote this song "Be Careful, It’s My Heart" for the movie "Holiday Inn" that it would be the breakout song from the movie. It was eclipsed by Bing's rendition of "White Christmas", and the rest is history.

This was probably a pretty big hit as well, reaching #2
