Now Is The Hour
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now is the hour when we must say goodbye
Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea
While you're away, o, then remember me
When you return, you'll find me waiting here

Sunset glow fades in the west
Night o'er the valley is creeping
Birds cuddle down in their nest
Soon all the world will be sleeping

Now is the hour when we must say goodbye
Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea

While you're away, o, then remember me
When you return, you'll find me waiting here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's Now Is The Hour reflect a sense of longing and melancholy as the singer bids farewell to a loved one who is about to sail away. The first stanza encapsulates the inevitability and sadness of separation: "Now is the hour when we must say goodbye/Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea/While you're away, o, then remember me/When you return, you'll find me waiting here". The second stanza heightens the sense of loss with images of fading light, creeping night, and sleeping birds. However, the last line of the song brings a glimmer of hope, as the singer promises to wait for the loved one's return.

My dad used to sit on the edge of my bed and sing me this song when I was a little boy. I never forgot it in my 75 years. It brings back such warm memories .I wish the world and my grandchildren could experience those times again.

Gee, I sure am glad you came along, lo-f#@king-l to point out Bingel's dark side.... My own dad came home from WW2 and drank like a fish too-- plus beatings-- and at age 7 began the process of raising me up to become a totally twisted teen boy slut by 14...
Good thing you and I haven't any Dark Sides, right?

We sang this when I was in high school many, many years ago. We sang the lyrics as Bing Crosby is singing them here. Love

This is one of the very best of Bing and the fantastic Ken Darby Choir.

I heard this for the first time today on the radio. Surprised that it was to the tune of Search Me O God.
