Jack O' Diamond Blues
Blind Lemon Jefferson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Jack o' diamond, jack o' diamond
Jack o' diamond's a hard card to play

Jack o' diamond, once in time he did rob a friend of mine
Jack o' diamond is a hard card to play

Bet the jack against the queen, it's gon' turn your money green
Jack o' diamond is a hard card to play

Jack o' diamond, jack o' diamond
Jack o' diamond's a hard card to play
Bet the jack against the four, you gon' win right in the door
Jack o' diamond is a hard card to play

Jack o' diamond made me cry, I expect to gamble 'til I die
Jack o' diamond is a hard card to play

Jack o' diamond, jack o' diamond
Jack o' diamond's a hard card to play

Overall Meaning

In Blind Lemon Jefferson's song "Jack O' Diamond Blues," the repeated line "Jack o' diamond, jack o' diamond, Jack o' diamond's a hard card to play" serves as a metaphor for the challenges and risks of life.

The singer sings about how Jack o' diamond once robbed a friend, highlighting the negative consequences that can come from taking risks or making unethical choices. This suggests that when you choose to play the "Jack o' diamond" card, it often leads to harm or betrayal.

The lyrics also mention betting the jack against the queen, which symbolizes taking a chance or making a bold move. The line about it turning your money green implies that the outcome of such a gamble is uncertain and could lead to either financial gain or loss. Therefore, the jack o' diamond card is seen as unpredictable and risky, reinforcing its reputation as a difficult and dangerous card to play.

The third verse continues to emphasize the tough nature of the jack o' diamond card. Betting the jack against the four is believed to result in winning right at the door, indicating that the card can bring unexpected successes, but it remains a challenging choice nonetheless.

The song concludes with the assertion that Jack o' diamond has made the singer cry. This line reflects the pains and emotional toll that comes with taking risks and engaging in gambling behavior. Despite this, the singer still expects to gamble until their death, highlighting the addictive nature of risky choices and the difficulty of breaking free from their allure.

Overall, the lyrics of "Jack O' Diamond Blues" convey a cautionary message about the difficulties and uncertainties of life, using the metaphorical card game as a representation of the risks and consequences involved in making choices and taking chances.

Back in hard times, I had to sell about 850 Blues 78's on eBay. This is one I couldn't part with and still have.

Good track. Love pre-war Blues, so haunting and timeless.

In 1995, my brother, a blues expert, sent me a tape of early blues from I think 1926-29, including this recording. I had always exposed my boys, then 8 & 10, to many kinds of music. The 10-yr-old: musically gifted--loved everything (he's a musician now). But my younger son always acted uninterested until he heard this song. He was really into it. I teased him, "I thought you said you didn't like music." His reply was, "I feel his pain." So thanks for posting this and bringing back that memory.

It's possible to emulate that haunting guitar sound by recording with a phone (I have an Galaxy S7 and setting it about 5 feet away with the microphone turned away from you. Helps to play in a space without carpeted floors too.
