BC had almost strengthened it again, then the Lich King attacked, and Garrosh's quest for glory have reignited the tensions in Northrend.

In Cataclism Garrosh tensions escalated with the invasion of Gilneas and Ashenvale, the attacks in the Barrens and many other places, coming into a full scale war at the end.

Mists picks it up here, but you can say that Garrosh is the one that bullied the truce since Lich King, Varian's pigheadedness aggravated the all thing and what happened in Siege may be a relief after all this nonsense infighting

I think Varian has really evolved since Wrath. He's really gotten more development, both as a leader and as a character: He's actually working to unite the Alliance, contain the bad elements in the Horde and is even willing to give peace a chance. As he says here, Vol'jin now has the potential to be a better leader than Garrosh ever was, and he basically says: "We'll leave you alone, if you just don't screw this up."

Moreover, as the recent novels, and in-game interactions with Anduin show - he's put his tragic past behind.

I truly believe Varian is the leader we've been needing. He's evolved into the Good King he was meant to be, just as Vol'jin has turned into the Warchief that the Horde needs.

"What a king must do!" has a very strong message... It's not about if Varian is stronger than all the horde leaders together or even stronger than just one of them. It's about making them respect him with his actions. It's about showing good will (by his request to stop the blood shed between horde and alliance), yet showing strong hand by "we will end you". They should know that he is a fucking KING at the end of the day and if something happens to him the whole of Orgrimmar will BURN.

People say it's not better than the ICC ending but you know i kind of loved this one. Always liked Vol'jin and i like how he is humble and said he wasn't worthy. Just seeing everyone accepting his leadership and the Horde finally being on the road to recovery brings a tear to my eye :)

As for Vol'jin becoming the new Warchief of the horde. I kinda saw it coming. He held the horde together during Garrosh's fall. I knew that the path to becoming Warchief would either go to Voljin or fall back to Thrall, but I had my doubts about Thrall returning to that position, after Thrall became the new Aspect of Earth and the events that followed it would change the course of his future as Warchief.

Love this cinematic, the Horde gets a war chief that is actually awesome, and the Alliance shows the Horde mercy in the form of a threat. Next expansion is going to be so much fun, because we all know either Jaina or Sylvanas will push the Horde and Alliance into an all out blood bath

It really depresses me how much of a scar Garrosh left, both on the horde and alliance. Even though he has finally been brought to justice (hopefully), all the blame now goes to the rest of the horde, despite their "innocence". Maybe we will see some clearing up of the relationship in the new expansion.

Varian is the strongest most epic character in WoW right now imo, so much character development since we first met him, he could of easily ordered the execution of the horde at this moment, the hordes entire army was split and two and severely weakened while the alliance remained strong but is allowing the horde a chance to redeem themselves, can't wait to see how this plays out.

During the book, The Tides of War, we see her change dramatically. Garrosh assembles a plot to destroy Theramore with a Mana-charged bomb, and in the attack, Jaina's calm and peaceful demeanor is finally destroyed. She refuses to attempt pacifistic measures against Garrosh's brutality, so she embraces the idea that the Horde must be destroyed.

I stopped playing after release week, but I can tell I've been missing out on some AMAZING lore developments. I feel sorry for Jaina, and I really hope she can get past her hate. I feel proud for Varian. He's become a cool guy. And Anduin seems interesting. I'm kind of amazed that Vol'jin became the new Warchief, but I shouldn't be surprised. I still hate Garrosh with a passion.

Sylvanas is only going the necromancy route, raising the dead, but they join the Horde willingly as per awakening as the newly risen forsaken. Jaina is following the same path of madness Arthas followed through her own blinding hatred. Sylvanas isnt going mad with blind hate, she's just raising corpses to let them continue fighting. Jaina is the one going batshit crazy like Arthas and Kael'thas did.

during the attack on theramore island, in lore the horde actually destroyed Theramore killing many people including Rhonin leader of the kirin tor, Jaina saw this as the final draw and essentially went insane.

According to the book in which this story is told, the Arcane Magic used for the mana bomb can turn people insane or at least affect their brain somehow. She got just enough of the Arcane Magic radiation to not die (that's why her hair are white and the eyes weird). So she might just not be her former self which would argue like you just did. That said, she didn't seem that blood thirsty in the book.

You really have to respect the Horde and their ways to be able to switch leaders to whome they find to be most worthy. Willing to give up their possession as top dog so that way they can better for their people. Unlike Alliance who go by Kings and family line, not willing to give up their position due to the benefits they receive or the ego they may have built. Now you can tell who really is making progress in Azeroth.

I keep bringing this up with my friends: What if Blizzard made a short story or mini series based on decisions that weren't made my characters in WoW. Like a story about what would happen if Varian decided to end the horde instead of giving peace a chance. Or if Garrosh repelled the siege and broke the horde. I'd like to see something like that.

Getting ganked wasn't the end of the world as escaping or holding your own till another player came to help wasn't all that hard to do. With Cata on, you literally had zero chance as players 10 levels higher could just one-shot you.

also, in vanilla (and TBC) world pvp was actually fun too. a lot of zones had PVP objectives.

i remember the glory that was silithus. and the plaguelands (that was plaguelands right? with the towers you could cap)

i feel like they should penalize attacking someone far beneath your level somehow (say more than 5 levels or something)
maybe give you a large power debuff while attacking them?

i can see jaina being a main antagonist in a future expansion if they keep her on this path of ruthless tactics and plotting, there hasn't really been much of a focus on the alliance side of world of warcraft lately but i suppose that's because of wrath of the lich king being centered arthus and now being centered around the warlords of the past in draenor, looking at both sides' past

take into account that Vol'Jin did not agree to take Varian's offer to end the war, and that Jaina seems to be the bloodthirsty one now. She may lead underground attacks against the Horde if they do call a truce (which they shouldn't seeing as how the game is based on this war). What I think may happen is that Vol'Jin may come close to deciding to call a truce, but then an outside factor (Jaina attacks etc.) will force him to choose war.

The alliance may have the numbers in org but the hordes leaders are all there in the same room with the MOST of the alliance leadership (minus velen, Muridin, falstad and Genn). Theres a difference between outnumbered and outmatched. The alliance in this case would be outmatched.

I have many characters both on Alliance and Horde, and I like them equally. I'm not into lore, but the idea of the Horde should be savage warriors bent on the Allianes destruction, and that's how Garrosh was. I always loved Garrosh, and I'm gonna miss him. :(

I actually agree with Matt. If Jaina decides to go down a new path like Arthas and Garrosh, if she decides on revenge over Honor, there is no place for her in the Alliance. Varian now sees the truth of his own son's ideals and and ends the war himself.

A lot of Warcraft characters have fallen from graces. Ner'Zulh was a highly respected Shaman and many Orcs trusted him until the skull of Gul'Dan corrupted him. Arthas was a beloved and respected Prince of Lordaeran, until he picked up Frostmourne. And Garrosh himself used to have honor. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power will corrupt absolutely, the corruption of WoW characters went from Gul'Dan, then Ner'Zulh, then Arthas, then Garrosh, it might pass on to someone else

Garrosh's unconvincing turnaround, that I was talking about, happened way back in Burning Crusade. Way before any Sha or any of this Warchief business. There's no convincing reason for it. One minute he's crying, the next he's the Hulk. Even in the face of the deepest betrayal, Thrall was never vengeful. Grom Hellscream knowingly drank demon blood and attacked the Orcs, but Thrall risked everything to RESCUE Grom, not punish him.

The book explains that Thrall struggled with this decision but Garrosh seemed to be the best choice. And did you know that if Magatha Grimtotem hadn't poisoned Garrosh's weapon in mak'gora (duel to the death) against Cairne. then Cairne would have won (but Garrosh was tricked, he didn't know the weapon was poisoned)

The way Vol'jin says "For the Horde" is entirely different from the way anyone else has said it. With everybody else "FOR THE HORDE" refers to glory in battle and war, but the way Vol'jin almost whispers it shows that he's above that. His goal is not to bring the Horde fights; his goal is to protect them.

Vol'Jin was the perfect choice to take the mantle of Warchief. Though, i must say my appreciation for Thrall has declined a great deal since his younger days. I felt genuine pride following him with a Horde character,but suddenly his shamanic path seemed to have taken all the prowess out of him. Sure,he has replaced his warriors repose with a more zen and spiritual way of life but...gah,not the same.
As for Garrosh, he had his moments of real respect, few as they were. It seemed more down to the crushing weight of his father's lineage that really set him off. Either way though, the future is wide open for both factions i suppose.
I just wish they'd kill Jaina. Going from blubbering, freakishly sweet optimist to cynical, hateful troublemaker.

You cant really blame Jaina for wanting revenge. She asked Thrall for help, he refused. Garosh bombed her city. Then Voljin asked Thrall for help and he didnt take long to agree. I think they are setting Jaina to eventually become the antagonist of a future expansion and they are doing it pretty well

In the new expansion Warlords of Dreanor Thrall will revise his role as a fierce warrior when he goes back to his roots of the old Frostwolf Clan and seeing his Father and cousins in battle, and he will be able to take his revenge on Gul'dan for everything he did, it will be exciting to see his progression of the path of the warrior he once was but still having his new role as the earth-wardem and keeping intact with his shamanistic roots

Well the land around that area was corrupted by the dark shamans, so Thrall couldn't use his shamanistic powers, which is why Garrosh was able to defeat him at the beginning of the encounter. And if Thrall can't use his powers, he wouldnt be able to defeat varian in melee combat. The most powerful mortal mage on azeroth was also backing up varian at that time. lol sorry for that nerd rant xD

Tides of War explains Jaina's actions/words. Read it to find out why she's like this now. But basically: She was exposed to insane amounts of arcane energy, hence why her eyes are now purple and her hair white. She's been consumed by grief and hatred, as well as arcane magic. This explains why she's no longer the peaceful leader she once was. Also keep in mind arcane magic has turned several mages crazy, and she was exposed to enough that would have killed most people.

Varian proving how awesome he is over Garrosh. He hates Orcs and the Horde almost more than anything else and yet he's able to put that aside for peace.

Im eager to see what the spark that causes the war in the next expansion... probably something by Sylvannis or Jaina, These two broads are crazy. I know the alliance plans on reclaiming Gilneas after this even probably next patch or next expansion that could be what causes it, or whispers from the old god that will be main antagonist in next expansion.

She helped killing Arthas who was the love of her life. She helped defend the Horde against her own father, killing him in the process. After that she says the only family she has left are the people of Theramore, and what did the Horde do? they killed them all. She is probably the person that has sacrificed the most for peace in Warcraft, and still has seen everyone she cares about killed (by the Horde mostly) so she has a right for being like that.

I am so happy that Vol'jin got appointed Warchief. I just knew he would. Although, I'm not exactly thrilled with Jaina's ideas about the Horde now. I understand that she's been hurt a lot thanks to Garrosh, but she used to be someone I admired. Now, I can't even recognize her as the same person.

Yeah, I can see that we're going to have a problem with Sylvanas in the future. Blizz made it clear the Undead never really cared for the Horde and Garrosh really was the only thing keeping her from throwing a strong plague on everything. And here she didn't even seem to be paying attention to Voljin becoming warchief when Voljin is one the most respected leaders in the Horde.

No... He was pushed back into the Sunwell, I doubt we even scratched him. Go back and watch the ending of that fight, he is very much alive and well. Sargeras is currently in the twisting nether, and according to the lore, the only way he can enter Azeroth is through a portal that is as powerful as the Well of Eternity. Even so, if he does come to Azeroth, the arrival itself will destroy almost everything, not to mention his BURNING LEGION. He has more demons than you can count.

that is a very true statement. He was born in the Alliance , and yes he will die in the Alliance. Which is really the only glory Stormwind has to offer, death.....zing...lol seriously its all in good fun.

You can't see it but the alliance leaders are there too, along with Jaina proudmoore and a handful of guards- I don't think Varian is too worried.

First her city (Theremore) was bombed by the horde in that bombing she lost Rhonin the current mage leader in Dalaran, Then on top of that the Alliance claimed a powerful item (The Divine Bell) that Garrosh could have used to gain more power, Just after they stored it safely in Darnassus the Sunreavers (mostly horde affiliated) used Dalaran as a gateway to go to darnassus and steal it, putting it in horde hands, Jaina assumed for Garrosh, She counted this as betrayal, Alot happened with her.

It's kind of funny how at no point did Vol'Jin stand at his full height during this cutscene. I have a feeling he would tower over Varian if he had. He's clearly taller than the average Troll who are typically taller than the average Human. He'd have an advantage in that regard if it ever came to a fight, but he is certainly less armored than Varian, so he'd have to be fast as well as tall.

I love how people still don't get that Jaina has a reason to hate the Horde more than any other person in Warcraft lore :D... she had to give up on her peaceful side sometime! You go girl! xD!

Thrall led his orcs to Kalimdor on the whim of Medivh the Prophet, because the Prophet knew that the Burning Legion was on the way. Along the way, he recruited the Darkspear trolls into the Horde, met Cairne Bloodhoof, who allied himself and the tauren with the Horde. Forsaken wanted to beat the shit out of the Lich King, and the Blood Elves joined with the Horde to better put themselves in a position so that they don't get wiped out.
