Blue Öyster Cult have been described as heavy metal, light metal, psychedelic rock, occult rock, acid rock, and progressive rock. They have also been recognized for helping pioneer genres such as stoner metal and speed metal.
The band is influenced by artists such as Alice Cooper, Grateful Dead, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, MC5, The Blues Project, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Sabbath.
While Blue Öyster Cult has been noted for heavy rock, they would often add their own tongue-in-cheek style. Keeping with their image, the band would often include out-of-context fragments of Pearlman’s The Soft Doctrines of Imaginos into their lyrics, giving their songs cryptic meanings. Additionally, the band would keep a folder of Meltzer’s and Pearlman’s word associations to insert into their music.
Blue Öyster Cult's longest-lasting and most commercially successful lineup included Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Bloom (lead vocals, "stun guitar," keyboards, synthesizers), Allen Lanier (keyboards, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Joe Bouchard (bass, backing vocals), Albert Bouchard (drums, percussion, backing vocals). The band's current lineup includes Roeser and Bloom, as well as Danny Miranda (bass, backing vocals), Jules Radino (drums, percussion) and Richie Castellano (keyboard, rhythm guitar, backing vocals).

With more control
Turn the other cheek
But when the punch comes, roll
Wish I was a kinder person
Could see the other's pain
Not overreact, never judge
Shrug off the spreadin' stain
But I'm a howler monkey
Moreau's half and half-man
A panther with its tail in a trap
A pumped up pyramid of pulsing glands
I'm damaged, and I like it
It made me what I am
I'm damaged, and I like it
The rest is just a sham
I'm damaged, and I like it
I live for rock 'n' roll
I'm damaged, and I like it
It thrills me to the soul
Gee, I told the girlfriend
I was gonna change
Gonna kick the habit and the taste
Trust me baby, this time it's real
There's a big part of me I've yet to waste
Don't give up baby, don't turn your back
I ain't no wailin' lost cause
I'll toss the pipe and heal the tracks
As long as you don't mind the blood
On my hands, drippin' down your back
That's right...
I'm damaged, and I like it
It made me what I am
I'm damaged, and I like it
The rest is just a sham
I'm damaged, and I like it
I live for rock 'n' roll
I'm damaged, and I like it
It thrills me to the soul
D-a-m-a-g-e-d [damaged] is what I am
D-a-m-a-g-e-d [damaged] is what I am
D-a-m-a-g-e-d [damaged] is what I am
D-a-m-a-g-e-d
What I am
[Damaged]
And I like it
I live for rock 'n' roll
I'm damaged, and I like it
It thrills me to the soul
I'm damaged, and I like it
It made me what I am
I'm damaged, and I like it
The rest is just a sham

The lyrics to Blue Öyster Cult's song "Damaged" describe the struggle of wanting to be a better person but being unable to resist one's own primal urges, such as a howler monkey, a panther with its tail trapped, or a pyramid of pulsing glands. The singer wishes they could be kinder and more empathetic to others, but instead they embrace their damaged nature and find solace in rock 'n' roll.
The chorus, "I'm damaged, and I like it," is a declaration of acceptance and even pride in one's flaws and imperfections, which have ultimately shaped their identity. The song also hints at the strain that these flaws can put on relationships, with the singer reassuring their girlfriend that they will change but acknowledging that there is still a "big part" of them that needs to be reckoned with.
Overall, "Damaged" is a celebration of the messy, imperfect nature of humanity, and a recognition that even our flaws can be a source of strength and resilience.

@Anthony Jacobs Fire of Unknown Origin: my 3rd fav BOC album, with their title track followed up by their masterpiece: "Burnin for You". My opinion the first 2 songs are the best, but the album is very strong all the way through.
John Shirley
OH GRAND POOBAH OF PENIS! You are so right. Also--you're right about the lyrics! I'm surprised you were able to decode that stanza starting with the howler monkey thing--I WROTE the lyrics and I had forgotten that bit...but that's It! People get lyrics wrong so often on you tube and on those internet lyrics sites. Where'd you get these? Note the great Allen Lanier playing organ on this--he's passed away now. The current band is very very good. Watch for a new album. And check out BLUE COUPE with the Bouchard brothers from the original BOC and Dennis Dunaway from Alice Cooper. Great band.
Rob Dotzler
Favorite song from this album, but it also opened with an almost hard core tune "See You In Black". That one smokes TOO! How these songs got no airplay is an absolute inditement to all that's wrong with the music industry. "Hammer Back" is pretty badass too. Just an overlooked masterpiece.

Hammer Back is the shit!! And BÖC got fked more than any other band EVER in the music industry!-! Gdamn shame!!
Greg Vincent Bolin Farlow
This song,"See you in black", "Hammer back" and "Harvest moon" are fantastics...
Chris Stark
I am glad they dont play these mainstream...only for the select and songs do not get worn out

Who wouldn't? I check weekly to see if there's a new release by my favorite artists. What band do you turn to for a new release each year? That isn't sarcasm, it's curiosity as so few classic bands have new releases on a regular basis.

Robbert Plants new stuff is good.
