Current members of Blue October include Justin Furstenfeld (lead vocals), Ryan Delahoussaye (violin/viola, mandolin, keyboards, and vocals), Jeremy Furstenfeld (drums, percussion), Matt Noveskey (bass guitar) and Will Knaak (guitar).
Popularized by their platinum-certified album Foiled (2006), which features the hit singles βHate Meβ and βInto the Ocean,β the group has continued to evolveβ¦ shifting from a far more pensive sound to one that is more optimistic and reflective of lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Justin Furstenfeldβs transformationβwhich will also be the focus of his soon-to-be-released documentary film, I Want It.
Once known for their stormy dynamic and self-destructive tendencies, Blue October couldnβt be more distinct from the band it once was, which is why their latest studio album, I Hope Youβre Happy, looks to push the envelope even further with a whole new approach. Justin Furstenfeld is quoted as saying "I think Blue October should never be limited to the instruments we have in the band. Iβm always about bringing in whoever can play whatβs best for the song in. Iβm also a huge fan of Peter Gabriel, and if you were to him all you can have is a guitarist a bassist and a drummer, heβd go βwhat?!β Thatβs how I feel. We took all the tools we had gotten from working all these kinds of people over the twenty-year span and made a really good album and weβre super proud of it. Itβs nice and colorful and positive and universally themed. Itβs something you can really sink your teeth into and not get sick of. You can always discover little new secrets about it along the way."
Their latest album, I Hope You're Happy, was released on August 17, 2018 on the band's own Up/Down Records label and was produced by Justin Furstenfeld and engineer Eric Holtz.
Previous band members have included Liz Mulally, Brant Coulter, Dwayne Casey, Piper Dagnino, Julian Mandrake, CB Hudson and Matthew Ostrander.

Darkest Side of Houston's Finest Day
Blue October Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Her ship arrived and came in yesterday
The darkest side of Houston's finest day
You fell alseep, my love
And I fantasize
That the wind blew harder than it ever did
This song we started, will it ever end
You fell alseep again
Well goodbye
With shaking hands I dropped it instantly
Then kicked the phone and stood invincibly
Oh, then started to cry
But I'm twenty now
And I wanna see my nineteenth year again
Hold on to me, you are the closest thing I've ever had
To a real friend
To a real friend, friend, friend
In Blue October's song "Darkest Side of Houston's Finest Day," the lyrics portray a man who is afraid and anxious as the woman he loves arrives in Houston. He describes it as the darkest moment of Houston's finest day, perhaps indicating the dichotomy of light and darkness, hope and despair. He reveals his frustration at her falling asleep and fantasizes that the wind is blowing harder than it ever did before. There is a sense of foreboding and uncertainty, as he wonders if the song they started will ever end, and if their relationship is coming to an end.
Later in the song, the man experiences an emotional breakdown as he senses that his love is slipping away. He drops the phone, kicks it, and cries. He expresses his longing to be younger and experience his previous year again. The last few lines reveal that he sees the woman as a real friend, perhaps indicating that their romantic relationship may have been one-sided.
The lyrics of the song are open to interpretation, and it is unclear what exactly the singer is afraid of and why he is experiencing such emotional turmoil. However, the song does a good job of conveying feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and desperation that people can experience during difficult times, especially in relationships.
