What Am I Doing Here
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With you so far away
I stand in front of this Ferris wheel
And I wonder what am I doing here
And I wonder what am I doing here
And all the drunks just stumble by
And mumble their abuse
And I wonder what am I doing here
And I wonder what am I doing here
After so long nobody's wrong
After so long nobody's right
After so long nobody's wrong
After so long nobody's right
On this useless night
With you so far away
I stand in front of this Ferris wheel
And I wonder what am I doing here
And I wonder what am I doing here
And I wonder what am I doing here
The lyrics to Blue Rodeo's song "What Am I Doing Here" capture the feelings of being lost and disconnected in a world that seems to be moving on without you. The singer is standing in front of a Ferris wheel on a "useless night," with the object of his affections "so far away." He is surrounded by drunks, who are "mumbling their abuse" and leaving him feeling disconnected and alone. The repetition of the question "What am I doing here," highlights his sense of confusion and frustration at his situation.
The lyrics evoke a sense of hopelessness and despair that will be familiar to many people who have found themselves in similar situations. The singer seems to be searching for meaning and purpose in his life, but he is unable to find it amidst the chaos and noise of his surroundings. The repetition of the phrase "After so long nobody's wrong, after so long nobody's right" serves to emphasize his sense of disillusionment with the world around him.
Overall, the lyrics to "What Am I Doing Here" are a powerful exploration of the human condition, and the struggle to find meaning in a meaningless world. They offer a poignant reminder that we are all searching for something, whether it be love, happiness, or simply a reason to keep going.
