Woman
Bo Diddley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm looking for a woman
That will work to set me down
I'm looking for a woman
That will work to set me down
I've been looking all night long
She can't be found

Well, I met one last night
And I told her what I liked
Well, I met one last night
And I told her what I liked
She said get away from here country boy
Go back to your countryside

Well, tell me baby
What you see wrong with me?
Well, tell me baby
What you see wrong with me?
Well, if I had you baby
Be goodlier than any man can be

Well, so long mama
Baby bye-bye you, bye
Well, so long mama
Baby bye-bye you bye

Well, now bye-bye baby
With those tears in your eyes

Overall Meaning

In "I'm Looking for a Woman," Bo Diddley sings about his search for a woman who will settle down with him. He's been looking all night but he still hasn't found the woman he's looking for. He goes on to describe a woman he met the night before who didn't share his interests and told him to go back to the countryside. Bo Diddley then asks her what's wrong with him and he promises that if he had her, he would treat her better than any man can be. The song ends with Bo Diddley saying goodbye to his mother and his unsupportive love interest.

The lyrics convey Bo Diddley's desire for a committed relationship and the challenges he faces in finding a woman who shares his interests. The woman he met the night before was dismissive of his passions and didn't want to pursue a relationship with him. Bo Diddley, however, is confident that he can love and treat a woman better than any other man.

One possible interpretation of the song is that it reflects the social barriers faced by black men in America at the time. Bo Diddley's search for a woman who will settle down with him and share his interests speaks to the desire for stability and fulfillment that many black men were denied due to the social and economic inequalities they faced.
