Dylan started his musical odyssey in 1959 when he began playing in Dinkytown, Minneapolis while attending the University of Minnesota. Shortly after starting to play he changed his stage name to Bob Dylan, after being influenced by the poetry of Dylan Thomas before legally changing his name in 1962.
Much of his best known work is from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest, promoted by Joan Baez. Some of his songs, such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'", became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements, with Joan Baez and Dylan singing together at the March on Washington in 1963. However he later became disenchanted with the civil liberty protest scene, feeling that he had been used by them.
His album Bringing It All Back Home marked a move away from the folk scene and a move towards rock and roll and Dylan began to consciously distance himself from his early association with civil rights. He also started to become irritated when being interviewed, often given facetious or irreverent answers to questions. Bringing It All Back Home was a controversial album as it the first on which he played electric guitar. This was seen by some of his fans as a betrayal of this folk roots, with some saying that it obscured his meaningful and poetic lyrics.
The second half of the 1960s was marked by a string of well received releases, with his song "Like a Rolling Stone", released in July of 1965, later being named "The Greatest Song of All Time" by Rolling Stone magazine in 2004, placing #1 in a list of 500 titles. It also marked the formation of Dylan's backing band The Hawks (who would later call themselves simply The Band). Dylan embarked on a world tour of Australia and Europe in 1966, during which he seemed to be under a lot of strain and pressure by both his fans, the music press and his own promoters. Dylan himself admitted that he began taking drugs seriously whilst on this tour, and found it immensely hard work. On returning to New York he crashed his motorbike, sustaining serious injuries in the process, and went into a period of withdrawal while he recuperated. During the late 1960s, Dylan again changed stylistic tradition, moving away from the psychedelic culture of the time. It was then that he recorded All Along the Watchtower, perhaps more famously recorded by Jimi Hendrix.
The 1970s were a period during which Dylan was more sporadic in his output, releasing some poorly received LPs. He rarely appeared in person until 1974, when he began touring again with his backing band The Band. He also wrote one of his most extensively covered songs, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, as well as what is now recognised as one of his best albums Blood On The Tracks. Towards the end of the 1970s, Dylan discovered Christ, and released some albums of gospel music. He started to talk to the crowd about his faith during his performances, and wouldn't play any of his early work, which alienated some of his previous fans.
Dylan today still remains an influential and popular artist; despite a period of little note between 1980-2000, his 2006 album Modern Times reached the US chart at #1, as did his 2009 album Together Through Life, in the US, Britain, France and several other countries. His 2012 album Tempest was also critically acclaimed. Since 1988, Dylan has been on the so-called Never Ending Tour, during which his performances have provoked controversy, with some critics claiming that his lyrics have become incomprehensible, an experience which is not helped by his tendency to change his set-list and vocals almost every performance.
Bob Dylan's strong influence over the past few years is becoming even more prominent amongst a growing group of younger emerging artists such as George Ellias and Devendra Banhart. Dylan's early lyrics incorporated politics, social commentary, philosophy and literary influences, defying existing pop music conventions and appealing widely to the counterculture of the time. While expanding and personalizing musical styles, Dylan has shown steadfast devotion to traditions of American song, from folk and country/blues to rock and roll and rockabilly, to Gaelic balladry, even jazz, swing and Broadway.
Dylan performs with the guitar, keyboard and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s. He has also recently performed alongside other iconic artists, such as Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Tom Petty and Eric Clapton. Although his contributions as a performer and recording artist have been central to his career, his songwriting is generally held as his highest accomplishment.
Nobel Prize for Literature (2016) - On October 13, 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for โfor having created new poetic expressions within the great American song traditionโ. The prestigious award has been given annually since 1901 and previous Nobel Laureates for Literature include Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett. Here is the speech written by Dylan, although unable to attend:

You Can Get Her
Bob Dylan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh, I can't get you off of my mind
When I try I 'm just wastin' my time
Lord I've tried and I've tried
and all night long I've cried
But I can't get you off of my mind.
Didn't think you would leave me behind
Do you think that it's smart to jump from heart to heart
When I can't get you off of my mind.
[Chorus]
You believe that a true love is blind
So you fool ev'ry new love you find
You've got stars in your eyes but they can't hide the lies
Oh, I can't get you off my mind.
[Chorus]
Bob Dylan's "You Can Get Her" is a poignant song about the struggle to move on from a failed relationship. The singer of the song is heartbroken and unable to get his ex-lover off of his mind. He expresses his frustration at his inability to move on, despite his best efforts. The song's chorus, "Oh, I can't get you off of my mind, when I try I'm just wastin' my time, Lord I've tried and I've tried and all night long I've cried, but I can't get you off of my mind," reflects the grueling emotional cycle of heartbreak.
The singer also expresses his disappointment and disillusionment with his former lover. He had believed that she would never leave him behind, but instead she turned out to be the "two-timin' kind." He questions the wisdom of her actions and wonders if it's truly wise to jump from heart to heart, while he remains unable to move on from her. The song is a raw and honest expression of the pain and confusion that accompanies a difficult breakup.
Overall, "You Can Get Her" is a powerful testament to the emotional toll of heartbreak. Dylan's lyrics and powerful vocals capture the pain and frustration that come with inability to let go of a past love.

Oh, I can't get you off of my mind
I am constantly thinking about you and cannot stop
When I try I 'm just wastin' my time
My efforts to forget you are pointless and only lead to frustration
Lord I've tried and I've tried
I have attempted to let go of you multiple times
and all night long I've cried
My sadness and longing for you have kept me awake at night
But I can't get you off of my mind.
Despite my best efforts, I am unable to stop thinking about you.
Didn't think you would leave me behind
I did not expect you to abandon me
But I guess you're the two-timin' kind
However, it appears that you are the type of person to juggle multiple lovers
Do you think that it's smart to jump from heart to heart
Is it really wise to constantly move from one love to another?
When I can't get you off of my mind
Especially when I am still haunted by thoughts of you
You believe that a true love is blind
You have convinced yourself that real love is ignorant of flaws
So you fool ev'ry new love you find
As a result, you deceive and manipulate every new partner you come across
You've got stars in your eyes but they can't hide the lies
Even though you may seem romantic and idealistic, your dishonesty will eventually be revealed.
Oh, I can't get you off my mind.
As much as I wish I could move on from you, I am unable to do so.

I laid on a dune, I looked at the sky,
When the children were babies and played on the beach.
You came up behind me, I saw you go by,
You were always so close and still within reach.
Sara, Sara,
Whatever made you want to change your mind?
Sara, Sara,
So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playin' with their pails in the sand,
They run to the water their buckets to fill.
I can still see the shells fallin' out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.
Sara, Sara,
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life,
Sara, Sara,
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleepin' in the woods by a fire in the night,
Drinkin' white rum in a Portugal bar,
Them playin' leapfrog and hearin' about Snow White,
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.
Sara, Sara,
It's all so clear, I could never forget,
Sara, Sara,
Lovin' you is the one thing I'll never regret.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells,
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through,
Stayin' up for days in the Chelsea Hotel,
Writin' "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
Sara, Sara,
Wherever we travel we're never apart.
Sara, oh Sara,
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you? I don't know.
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm.
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.
Sara, oh Sara,
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress,
Sara, Sara,
You must forgive me my unworthiness.
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore.
You always responded when I needed your help,
You gimme a map and a key to your door.
Sara, oh Sara,
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow,
Sara, oh Sara,
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

So glad my parents called me after this song. My sweet mom died 10 years ago and we've burried my dear dad one week ago. My heart is broken but I'm so thankfull for everything they learnt me. Love, but also the real music!
@WolfCourtaud
May they rest in peace, I'm sorry for your lose. I was listening to this song with my Dad, and we don't talk tho he's still alive. But those are still good memories and I'm sure you got much better ones with your parents. That's what this song is about, remembering and cherishing loving memories that stay with us although the people that created them ain't around anymore.
